Island of Fire and Into Oblivion

Post by wodin »

Two must read books about Stalingrad mainly from the German perspective and the fighting leading upto the city battle and the factory district in particular you wont find better. Both by Jason Mark. Also Iron Cross Brigade, Croatian Legion and Death of a leaping horseman are fantastic aswell.

He is currently writing about a small unit of German paras that fought in the city. I never knew any paras where there until now. Very interesting. I suppose Goering wanted some there on his behalf once the city fell to them.

I have Island of Fire and Into Oblivion but I don't have Iron Cross Brigade. What is your assessment of its value to scenario development at division and corps level?

It's a great read but I'd say not much use regarding your questions.

Glantz is more the man for that. He recently released a condensed one volume book of his massive Stalingrad magnus opus

Ouch, those books aren't cheap! From your reviews, they look great though.

Not cheap, though Island of Fire has been republished and is now at a decent price. I imagine the rest of his back catalog will be done aswell, hopefully. The only one I haven't read is Croation Legion which I really want.

EVen at the top price Jason Marks books are easy worth every penny. By far the best books I've read on the East front.

Link to Island of Fire, not a bad price considering the price now for the original paperback!!

Jason Marks' books contain an amazing amount of unit-level detail, never published photographs, and unique personal accounts. Highly recommended.
