RE: Micromanagers Intro to Distant Worlds: Return of the Shakturi
I've attached the newly refit Stinger Escort to Fleet 1 to help ensure total victory at Calandes.
With the new destroyers now on-line, its time to order more ships. I'm ordering 1 destroyer, 1 Frigate and 2 Explorers.
I'm also investing about $7K in High Tech Research To Triple the speed on my Sensor project.
All my explorers are pressing the search for the pirate base.

RE: Micromanagers Intro to Distant Worlds: Return of the Shakturi
Looks like the pirates have left Calandes so Fleet 1 just needs to secure the area while the construction ships do their job. I'm keeping the destroyer and escort in this fleet and sending the Frigate back to the homeworld for refit to Tooth Class.
Just got the word that my Fighter Technology Project is complete while I was watching one of the Feelers easily outrun a Kaltor.
The hunt continues for the pirate base. But, so far there have been no raids on my colonies.

Just when you think you've got a handle on things DW throws you a curve. It looks like Calandes is turning out to be monsterville. My Explorer ship seems to have missed this wondering Ardius that now wants to eat my newly arriving constructor. Fleet 1 is on the attack but our of position. I guess the race is on to see if the constructor can survive long enough for fleet 1 to rescue it.
I wonder if this beast ate the lone pirate frigate I saw here earlier?

The pause feature in DW is your best friend since there always seems to be 3 or 4 things happening at once (Just like home). I'm using it to suspend the battle at Calandes, as I bring up my ship sesign screen. I want to add my new Proximity Sensors to the Feeler, Mandible, Tooth, and Stinger Class ships. I am also appending the designation "II" to their class types.

I have made all the previous designs for these ships obsolete since I do not want to produce any military ships without proximity sensors.

Finally, I've upgraded my Medium Space Port to include the new sensors and also added 2 squadrons of fighters. Of course I had to add an additional Life Support system and habitation module to support all the newly assigned fighter pilots and support crews.

You can have both stories running at the same time.
They work best together as the first storyline sets up the second one and gives you some potential bonuses that can come in very handy.

Looks like my Constructor escaped!
As DW would have it, I am interrupted with a message just as I move in for the kill. At least it looks like something interesting. I'm pausing the game again to check it out.

Wow a colony ship from an advanced race. I will need to ask my science officer for a run down on my options before I made a decision. Using the construction screen they filter the top selection to only show colony ships & then click the components tab for a report on what's inside.

One last step before making the call. I bring up the Galactopedia refernce for these guys.
Ewww, they're just too furry to work with. Let's eat em and try to reverse engineer their technology.
I'm sending the ship to my home planet to strip it.

Looks like we killed the Ardius, butt took 3 damage points on the destroyer. Fleet II has upgraded both destroyers to Mandible II Class so I am sending them to Calandes and bringing back Fleet I for a refit. I am also ordering the upgrade of my Space Port.

SPOILER should be tagged. If you play both the expansion story and original story is it in sync.
Yes, and agreed we should warn about that.
Justascratch, can you please post any future storyline spoilers in a way that gives folks some warning if they want to avoid them?
Regards,
- Erik
Please go back and put a note about the spolier before people stumble across it, and then read that you should have put a spoiler warning in! [:D]
While the battles the British fight may differ in the widest possible ways, they invariably have two common characteristics – they are always fought uphill and always at the junction of two or more map sheets.

Thanks for the report, Justascratch.
It really shows in a bit more details what to expect of the expansion (MUCH!).
Now that it's planned to be released on thursday, I really can't wait.
Cheers
Edit:
I had a question by the way. When you retire the colony ship, does it only provide a bonus in some research fields, or do you get the related techs directly ? (Like Kaldos Hyperdrive in the example)

When and where was it announced for a planned release Thursday?

This has been tweaked quite a bit for the expansion. There is a chance I won't get anything, but I'm hoping to get at least 1. Usually you can expect a tech bump in the area that the ship has the most advances over your own techs. But again, it's a role of the dice.

Argien:
Sorry for the mispost. I'm typing and eating at the same time & my coordination isn't up to it.
I may not get any tech bump at all from the colony ship, and this asect of the game has been tweaked in the expansion. Usually you can hope for a tech advance in the area that the ship has the greatest advance over your empire's techs.
Keep in mind, it is still a roll of the dice.

RE: Micromanagers Intro to Distant Worlds: Return of the Shakturi
Well folks I need to wrap this up. I had hoped to chronicle the first ten years of a game, but with family coming in and the level of detail I wanted to provide it was just too agressive a schedule for me.
I would also like to appologize again for the spoiler screen and anyone who was affected by it. I hope it won't put you off purchasing this wonderful expansion. The back story is deep and has plenty of surprises in store. But, beyond that there have been so many subtle refinements and additions that the game simply offers a much more elegant playing experience and reflects the tireless efforts of many talented people.
I hope you've found this AAR effort useful.
