[Video Series] Distant Worlds Universe ~ Under the Hood Preview

This is episode one of a three-part look at Distant Worlds Universe. Surprisingly there won't be actual game-play in any of these three videos - just a very close look at the differences and most importantly what the game will now offer to modders.

Part two and three to follow. Part 2 will go through the modding capabilities and in part 3 we'll make a simple mod, adding a race-specific component and add it to the research tree.

I noticed that in the game editor, there is a new item for editing gas clouds - would be nice to see that in more detail. [Edit: no, it isn't new; that's nonsense; my bad - 'characters' is new, though. It would be nice if you could change the nebulae and their names.]

I also saw that you seem to be able to pick a particular graphic for each planet - is that correct?

Here is episode 2. Will really only be of interest to modders I think. No gameplay yet.

As far as the question about gas clouds etc. I can't see a way to remove the clouds or the cloud names. You can specify a specific image file for planets though.

Thanks Das, finally an answer to my question from months ago - we can indeed play a random map with a basic start while still using the expanded tech tree! Yay!

Hi guys,

Just wanted to add that we've been in contact with Das to thank him for these preview videos and also to discuss some of his suggestions. I wanted to mention two areas that were brought up in the videos so far. As a result of the feedback from Das, we're planning to add more flexibility on defining species-specific techs and on adding events to random galaxies post-release. Can't give any specifics yet, but we think both should be possible.

Great to see some of the old modders coming out of the 'wood-work'. ;)

This episode once again has no game-play - just building a mod that creates a race-specific component and then adding it into the tech tree.

And as Erik said, some of the suggestions in the series are being considered. :)

I just watched Das´s first video and was shocked about the limitation for events to be only possible in none-random-maps. That would have been a major let-down for me personally as I never play pre-defined maps. I only play random (the more random things in a game the more I like it :-D ).
So I just wanted to thank you for considering it to be added later on.
