Another Win 10 startup problem

Post by Skyforger »

Hey!
I just bought and installed the Steam Version of DW:U on my Windows 10 machine.
Win 10 was a fresh install, no update.

The Crashdump is attached to this post.

Things I already tried:
- (re-)installed everything from the _redist folder
- run as admin
- win 7 compatibility mode
- win 8 compatibility mode
- switching standard media player from Groove Music to VLC
- setting playmovie to 0 in startup.ini
- updating graphics drivers (card is Radeon R9 380, drivers version 15.12)

Splashscreen opens, but when I click start game, nothing happens.

Any ideas?

Cheers,
Markus

How to get a DxDiag report file:

1. Click on "START" (on Windows 8 press “Windows key” and the “R” key at the same time)
2. Click "run" (skip this step on Windows 8)
3. Type in "dxdiag" and click "OK"
4. Check through the tabs and perform all tests
5. Click "Save all Information..." and save the text file to a location of your choice

We prefer that DxDiag files be posted as message attachments rather than pasted into the body of the post.

add the exe of the game to your Anti Virus and firewall program, to make sure check the logs of these to see if it was one of them which was to blame.

That usually means a 3rd party program, like an Internet security programs, is interfering with the game or update installation.

please make sure you are running the latest game version and have up to date drivers installed on your pc,

If you have the original version. So you'll need to update it from the Internet.
Please note that you'll only need the last update, as the updates are comprehensive.

Here's the dxdiag.

Not the problem, I think.

switching standard media player from Groove Music to VLC ?

why?

have you at least tried setting it to default one that came with windows, like media player, as that at least works, where VLC may not. worth a try.

most of the errors in the log file are from Windows Defender it says

may take a while longer as i need to convert to English to read the rest...

first error is from a program InstallManagerApp.exe

second is from DistantWorlds.exe

3rd is from TiWorker.exe

with the rest either being windows based ones from MpTelemetry (which is windows 10 talk back app) to windows defender plus firefox.exe.

so out of 10 errors logged, only one game related, tbh any of the other 9 others can hang or cause errors with a game or app / program.

regarding just the game error,

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\WER\ReportArchive\NonCritical_DistantWorlds.ex_5df5f6eb4c23d79fd060834fce22b5b8fe284fa_00000000_019ce5cb

it says none Critical, so did the game just hang? stop working or something else happen in the background that stopped it?

as there's not enough information there to say of point to it being a game error, as no game error code?

what did windows event viewer error message say? is there any error codes at all shown or displayed / seen ?

for me don't run the game, just get it updated to latest version first,

add the exe of the game to your Anti Virus and firewall program, to make sure check the logs of these to see if it was one of them which was to blame.

That usually means a 3rd party program, like an Internet security programs, is interfering with the game or update installation.

then re try and run it

compatibility mode isn't needed either or should work without it if all above is done

Yes, I tried. I only changed the Music Player from the Win 10 Groove PLayer because you suggested in another thread that it might help. Windows Media Player is not listed as an alternative on my system, and I have not found a way to install it on Win 10, hence I tried VLC.
most of the errors in the log file are from Windows Defender it says

I told Windows Defender to ignore the game exe - no luck
