Axcess violation exception seems really strange. Did you try running it as admin?

Ran as admin and still got

Alright, I have a little info. Not sure if it will be of any help. I was able to get the game running with baconmod *once* on Windows 10 update 2004.

I'd been playing earlier today with just RetreatUE + DasBlue. Bacon was not installed.

I decided to try again after re-reading these posts. Steps from memory:

- add an exclusion in Windows Security -> Virus & threat protection settings -> Exclusions (near the bottom). I added an exclusion for the entire Distant Worlds install folder.
- drag bacon files directly from the zip to my DW install directory (this got around the issue where Windows was trying to delete it due to suspected virus).
- start DW normally through steam -> DW launcher.

Game started without issue, and I was able to start a new game and it loaded in. I didn't think to test any of the baconmod commands while I had it open, as I wanted to see if I could reproduce opening the game.

I was not able to start DW w/ baconmod a second time.

EDIT: Hmm. I just tried again after turning off my firewall and it started.
EDIT2: just tested Ctrl+e in-game and was able to run baconmod commands.

Thanks rollhax but if you can do this no one else can. Exclusions don't work and even turning off WinDef completely in gpedit and with 3rd party software don't work. My pc is so wide open a truck could drive through. I tried firewall, dep, dism, scn, replacing dll's, .net uninstall, directx, permissions, security and account settings, etc... there's more but I forget.

The only solutions atm are to not upgrade windows or to dual boot (maybe vm too).

And to be honest I can still play the game normally so this isn't game breaking (though I do miss things).

Yeah my "fix" seems intermittent at best. I've gotten the game to start twice now. I was able to play for an hour the second time until it hardlocked and ran my CPU at 95% during a manual save. Wasn't able to start again after.

Roger....... I am starting to see some additional results with why Defender has an issue with Bacon Mod

2 messages from defender below as there is a false trojan warning being triggered.

After taking Allow on both messages from Defender I now get bacon mod remaining running as a background process with 25 to 45 % cpu usage

One time in an earlier version of Bacon Mod one anti-virus program flagged it as a virus. I submitted the mod to them and in their next update they fixed it. Perhaps I can do the same with Microsoft? Although I would think all the things you guys have done to whitelist it and even turn off the Windows Defender would have the same effect.

At least rolihax's post gives a glimmer of hope.

[Edit]. File submitted to Microsoft with explanation of the problem.

[Edit edit] It now occurs to me that maybe one of you should submit the file instead. Since my computer doesn't have a problem with it there might not be a log there for them to analyze. Here is the link to submit a file:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/wdsi/filesubmission

Be sure to include in the note that it worked fine before the 2004 update.

Have submitted the file........ got this back almost immediately saying it is not malware but then saying to the right of it that malware Trojan:Win32/Wacatac.B!ml was detected with the mod file and is being scanned and pending.......

Microsoft just got back to me after scanning the bacon mod file.....
Originally they said a trojan was detected...now they are saying no malware detected.
Confused?

I sent the file back to them regarding the file and letting them know that it works pre Windows 10 2004 but not with 2004 installed. Have asked them to get back to me.

The feedback I got back from them after resubmitting the file immediately said no problem with the file and all clean......
Will wait for a reply from them re Windows 10 2004.

Had scanned my system as well with Microsoft Safety Scanner which detects all malware, trojans and other nasties and Microsoft Safety Scanner had no problem with the Bacon mod file at all.

Have just received word from Microsoft

We have removed the detection. Please follow the steps below to clear cached detection and obtain the latest malware definitions.

1. Open command prompt as administrator and change directory to c:\Program Files\Windows Defender
cd %ProgramFiles%\Windows Defender
2. Run “MpCmdRun.exe -removedefinitions -dynamicsignatures”
3. Run "MpCmdRun.exe -SignatureUpdate"

Alternatively, the latest definition is available for download here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/wdsi/definitions

Thank you for contacting Microsoft.

I tried the steps above and was able to get the game to launch with Baconmod installed on the 4th attempt. The first 2 attempts was the typical "Baconmod by Roger Bacon" pop up and then nothing. The 3rd attempt I got a spinner for my mouse cursor but again nothing. DistantWorlds.exe was not running in task manager. 4th attempt I got the splash screen and the game started without issue. This is similar to the behavior I was seeing earlier.

Commands worked in game, but the game immediately crashed when I tried to save.

I can confirm that as was the case reported by rollhax I was able to get Bacon Mod to start up...... once.
Unfortunately it crashed as soon as I got to the menu screen.

These are the 4 messages that need to be looked at to determine why the mod is crashing.
Using latest version of the mod
I believe Defender should no longer be a cause but still checking

The file is not malware and we cannot reproduce any detection on the file. If detection is still observed, please follow the steps below to capture support log files from the system reporting detection.

On Windows 10, from elevated command prompt, change to directory "%programfiles%\windows defender" and execute mpcmdrun.exe with option GetFiles:
cd "%programfiles%\windows defender"
mpcmdrun.exe -GetFiles

On Windows 7, from elevated command prompt, change to directory "%programfiles%\microsoft security client" and execute mpcmdrun.exe with option GetFiles:
cd "%programfiles%\microsoft security client"
mpcmdrun.exe -GetFiles

All created log files will be compressed into MPSupportFiles.cab. Please send us the detected file and MPSupportFiles.cab via our web portal https://aka.ms/wdsi (select Submissions/Submit a file). We will continue the investigation once we receive the support log files.

Thank you for contacting Microsoft.

at this stage I do not believe Defender is blocking the file now and it is a matter of looking at what is happening with the file

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ntdll.dll

Keep in mind other games are not working properly with windows 10 2004 and thankfully original distant worlds universe still works.

Thanks rjord1.

Now that we are past the Windows Defender issue, please try the exe I posted a link to in post 1134. See if that one crashes. It is Bacon mod with everything disabled.
