More fun with ship sizes

Post by tjhkkr »

Hey gang, have any of you folks ever upgraded your technology such that you can no longer produce a class of ships? The reason was ship size (yes, I know, I am the only guy out there that runs into trouble with ships sizes -- probably because I am being punished for giving Igard guff about the Romulans [;)]). I think the ship was 366, and the max was 350.
I was producing cruiser level ships fine, then I just advanced my technology, and I was no longer able to produce my cruiser level ship. And so I go in and un-retire the prior design, and even THIS ONE was above the 350 max size. So I had to remove the troop module... just so I could get a heavy ship game... (the pirates were rather busy raiding my nation/state and I needed something to blast them to dust: not very Jedi-like I grant you, but necessary for survival [:D].)
Has anyone else had this?

Even now, my spies are ensuring your ship designs are flawed and inferior to the great Romulan Star Empire!!

Weren't you having difficulty with this a while back, tj?

If you develop new tech and then auto-upgrade a design which is close to the maximum size allowed by your shipyards, then you always risk that design going above the limit. Happens to me quite often when I do this. An increase of 16 is about the largest you can expect, depending on how many components are upgrading.

You are best to design your own ships, but if you prefer to auto upgrade then you should immediately edit the new design and remove 1 or 2 components to cut the design back down.

You must research construction tech to increase the size limit of your shipyards. I actually build my destroyers to 350 and my cruisers to 500, so I don't really build cruisers until later.

Yes, I was having trouble with ship size. I guess I have just been lucky to this point. Exactly what you describe is what I encountered. It is good to know. What you suggested is exactly what I did; modify the modules within the ship to get the necessary space.
I do modify my own ships

So it would appear then that there are no additional modifiers to being a cruiser over a destroyer. In that case, it makes sense to wait until later to construct a cruiser rather than a destroyer.

Thank you!
