Good Starting Scenarios for Soviet Player

The new Cold War turned hot wargame from On Target Simulations, now expanded with the Player's Edition! Choose the NATO or Soviet forces in one of many scenarios or two linked campaigns. No effort was spared to model modern warfare realistically, including armor, infantry, helicopters, air support, artillery, electronic warfare, chemical and nuclear weapons. An innovative new asynchronous turn order means that OODA loops and various effects on C3 are accurately modeled as never before.

Good Starting Scenarios for Soviet Player

Post by byzantine1990 »

Hello,

I'm new to this game but pretty experienced with Cold War war games/doctrine. I'm fascinated by Soviet cold war doctrine and always love playing them in these games. What are some good scenarios to start out with before starting the Soviet campaign?

Also, Do you ever use smoke artillery missions as the Soviets? With all the thermals it seems like it would be more of a hazard than help.

Finally, when your staff calls in an artillery strike for you and there's nothing there, was it a pure guess and they are wasting shells?

Let me see if I can tackle these questions.

#1. Any scenario with Soviets in it can be played from the Warsaw Pact side by choosing the version that starts WS or WM (Warsaw PAct player, small or medium scenario).

#2. Soviet smoke can still be effective against non-Thermal units. Not all NATO units have thermals. Hitting them with HE rounds is usually the better play as it degrades their effectiveness even if there are no kills.

#3. The staff gets spotting calls from other units, but the targets may move out of the target area by the time the command cycle is done to order the shoot. Sitting still on the Cold War battlefield is never good if you can be seen.
OTS is looking forward to Southern Storm getting released!
