Maps from time period

Post by Zoidberg »

Hi there,

I'm a big cold war buff and i really like Flashpoint Campaigns (especially because it takes place right on my doorstep).
But i noticed that the maps in the game are not correct for the time period. I.e the map "Bad Neustadt" has the Autobahn A71 on it that partially was finished in 2005.

Will we see in southern storm correct maps for the time period?

Hi,

great question, good spot! Since Red Storm, our team has grown, and for Southern Storm we have more capacity to invest in map creation.

As a result, Southern Storm's maps will be (close to) period correct, with Autobahn and Bundesstraße trajectories matching 1989, some old regional rail roads (and their bridges) restored, and 1989's army bases, air strips and supply locations reinstated. We also have one of the Notlandeplätze (road/highway runway) on the map.

From which region in Bayern are you?

p.s. the Eiterfeld map (and its smaller variants Rasdorf and Steinbach), as part of our FCRS: Germany Reforged add-on, should also be period correct (for 1989).
It covers the northern Fulda corridor, and has the the old B84 trajectory just north of Hünfeld and the old rail road from Hünfeld to Leibolz (today a gorgeous bike path).
It also features (the now defunct) Point Alpha, the Werve Thompson Army Airfield south of Bad Hersfeld, and the BGS Kaserne in Hünfeld.

Cool! Southern Storm might have you fighting literally at or near the doorstep where you grew up in Oberfranken.

For Southern Storm, I've been using the following set of sources (and sometimes more):
- http://autobahnatlas-online.de/Karte.htm (Patrick Scholl's highway / primary roads maps, including one from 1990)
- http://www.relikte.com and https://de.wikipedia.org for (former) army bases, air strips, depots, training areas, etc.
- http://www.geschichtsspuren.de/artikel/ ... e-nlp.html, http://www.mil-airfields.de/airfields.html for air fields
- http://www.vergessene-bahnen.de for former rail roads
- Der Neue Große Shell-Atlas: Deutschland, Europa - Neuausgabe 1987/88 (book) and 1975-1977 Soviet Military Maps of the World (from http://loadmap.net) for smaller roads and detail

If you, with your Cold War interest and local knowledge, have good sources to add, please let us know.

Enjoy Red Storm while you wait for Southern Storm : )

I would be glad to help.

cold-war.de -> is a good site for all subjects i.e. military bases, depots, SAM sites
sperranlagen.de-> site with data for prepared barriers i.e. roads, bridges etc. for demolition to slow the advance. This might be good for some scenario designs

Regarding operational plans from the warsaw pact, i find it especially hard to find good subjects for the operational plans of the CSLA. But i can tell you what i know so far. The line of attack for the 8th Guards Army was Hof-Coburg-Schweinfurt-Bad Kissingen-Fulda-Bad Hersfeld.
The main thrust for the 8th Guards Army was towards Frankfurt a. Main but parts of the 8th Guards Army would push towards Bamberg. Those attacks would be supported by nuclear strikes from the soviet strategic rocket troops on Nürnberg, Bamberg and Öttingen. 1. Echelon consisted of the 39th Guards Motor Rifle Division and the 57th Guards Motor Rifle Division. The 57th would attack from Hof. Their reconissance battalion would have to take the staging area for the attack on Hof. The left neighbour of the 8th Guards Army was the 1. CSLA Army, but i can't give you detailled plans for them at the moment. The 3. Army of the GDR was kept as reserve.
On NATO sid there was the US VII Corps and the II Corps from the FRG. However parts of the West German III Corps where stationed north of Bamberg at Ebern. I think an out of the blue attack would have caught them in the sector of the VII Corps.

I'm working currently on an map for Bamberg, based on your QGIS manual.

Cool. AAF Breitenau, Warner Barracks, Muna.
I really struggled figuring out the 1989 trajectory of the B4/B22 through Bamberg and the 1989 Breitengüßbach junctions. I probably got the B505 right.
So if you happen good info on these roads, I'd appreciate them.

If you need help with (rendering) your map, pls let me know.
