Level Bombers not doing damage

Eagle Day to Bombing of the Reich is a improved and enhanced edition of Talonsoft's older Battle of Britain and Bombing the Reich. This updated version represents the best simulation of the air war over Britain and the strategic bombing campaign over Europe that has ever been made.

Level Bombers not doing damage

Post by marshalldavout »

Played 2 days of Eagle Day so far, and I noticed that only dive bombers are doing damage to targets, particularly radar sites. I'm thinking it has probably got something do with the the altitude I set, I've been setting them to the default 20,000 feet.

I did a quick research, and saw that historically the he-111 can drop bombs from 4000-5000 meters, so I'm thinking I should set them as such? around 10000-15000 feet? But I'm still not sure, or am I doing something wrong.

20,000 feet is a bit high, especially for 1940. Try 12-15K. Recon helps, and pick the best gruppe for the lead group. Experiment with this but try using only 50-60 bombers in the raid. Too many bombers are a waste because of smoke gradually obscuring the target. Also, determining results are meaningless unless you have a recent recon.

Others may have good time-tested tips for BoB.

HI.
1st day of BoB campaign as Axis you will have sketchy at best recon on targets. Most raids will FAIL!! Spend the first day or 2 to get many recons done, use those Ju86 for the most important targets as they can stay above RAF fighters. Use 200-400 foot high limits for radar on the coast and try to spread the missions out across the whole day to avoid alerting too much of the RAF.
Once you have recons don't forget to keep up to date photos on your most important targets. This info will give a basic break down on numbers and size of AA defences. Most radar only has light AA so whilst the 87's do the best damage they are also the most vulnerable to the defences. Use level bombers just above the highest bracket of light AA for the best results and send them in 10-20-30 minutes after a main raid has sucked up the nearest defending fighters. Create a gap in the radar coverage, exploit it and then widen it.
Also when setting your bombers heights check out how your 109's compare to the Spits and Hurricanes for agility and perhaps set the height for your best combat advantage? Overall if you need to hit the target regardless of losses, you need to be lower than you think.
Mark.
