Strafing Railways

So I notice my fighters and night fighters tend to attack railways a lot, but I've never noticed it doing any real damage. Does this produce any effect other than pulling them into light AA range?

As far as I've seen, it does next to nothing.

It causes some damage to rail use at that location which slows down the movement of supply to your troops.
