Will this game be on sale around Christmas?

Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: The German-Soviet War 1941-1945 is a turn-based World War II strategy game stretching across the entire Eastern Front. Gamers can engage in an epic campaign, including division-sized battles with realistic and historical terrain, weather, orders of battle, logistics and combat results.

The critically and fan-acclaimed Eastern Front mega-game Gary Grigsby’s War in the East just got bigger and better with Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: Don to the Danube! This expansion to the award-winning War in the East comes with a wide array of later war scenarios ranging from short but intense 6 turn bouts like the Battle for Kharkov (1942) to immense 37-turn engagements taking place across multiple nations like Drama on the Danube (Summer 1944 – Spring 1945).

Will this game be on sale around Christmas?

Post by Jacko »

Now, I hope I don't offend anyone with this question, but will this game be offered on sale around Christmas? I really would like to try it, but the current price is a bit steep for me.

I have no inside information but the usual case for Matrix is to put most things on sale except new releases this year. Sale usually begins right after Thanksgiving and continues until the new year. Most things get around a 33% discount judging by years past with much older games getting discounted more. With quite a few of there games on steam this year curious to see the sale this year.

Polishing my crystal ball ..... Sorry but it refuses to show me an answer. All you can do is wait and hope for a discount.

Or buy it and know that you're getting your money's worth. I bought it in the first month of original release. I'm still playing it avidly.

A long, long time ago I used to play TOAW (The Operational Art of Warfare). It was good, but not always very balanced. I hope this game is TOAW on steroids. When there is indeed a discount of 33 percent after Thanksgiving I will surely buy it.

In the mean time perhaps you can tell me something about the game. How realistic is it? Is it for instance possible to realistically simulate the relief operation at Stalingrad or the fighting in Hungary? I'm a fan of alternate scenarios and I like to change some factors, like for instance one or two divisions more during operation Winter Storm or not attacking at Kursk, but defending. Is it possible to adjust 'reality' and see what happens then?

the game is hardwired in some respects. In particular the German OOB is keyed into historical arrivals and departures.

There was a deliberate design decision not to tie the players to historical errors. So there is no e-Stalin ordering stand fast orders or e-Hitler deciding on an offensive in the summer of 1943 etc. So yes you can explore, re-organise your armies as you want ... move Pzrs out of AGC either north or south (or both) - see what happens.

And how does this game compare to the Panzer Campaign series? I must admit never have played those either, but can you give me your opinion please?

Loki100, what happens to units that were historically destroyed like the 6th army if they are not destroyed in the current game?

I think this has been the source of some controversy in the past.

My understanding is some units are removed as the Germans kept some of the rebuilt formations in the West. Others aren't (as they were returned to the Soviet Union). It maybe that some recent patches have made this a bit less of a hit on replacements etc.

In effect, you should end up with the same number of post-Stalingrad divisions as were deployed by mid-43. Obviously in most games its unlikely they will be destroyed and rebuilt but even so you will lose a few (those that never came back) to simulate reinforcement of France/Balkans etc.

But you may get a more coherent answer from someone who understands the German OOB better than I do.
