CHANGE NAMES/CREATE HQ'S

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

Is there anyway to change the names of headquarters units, like change xii transport command to recon command? or can i create a new headquarters unit for all my recon planes?

Not unless you use the editor.

But you certainly can assign recon units to XII Transport Command or Malta Air Command after those units outlive their original purpose.

Also, there's a scenario called "1943-45 Campaign (Addl Air HQs) that has many more air HQ's (e.g., 1st, 2nd, and 3rd US Bomb Divisions under 8th Air Force) and therefore ability to plan many more air directives per turn. It's the only thing I play anymore.

Can you create air groups from air squadrons?

No, there's no ability to break down or combine air units. They're a different database object than are ground units.

There's some getting used to the subsidiary Air HQ's. For example, if you have air units assigned to the 1st US Bomb Division, you can use them in an air directive either under that HQ or under 8th Air Force. But if you have air units assigned to the 8th Air Force directly, you can't use them for an 1st Bomb Division AD.

I end up pushing the air groups down to the subsidiary HQ's. I assign 5-6 Lancaster or Halifax groups per each of the No. 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 9 RAF Groups, and have them each do their own strategic bombing AD's at individual target. I set up a 3-hex radius AD centered on Essen for Bomber Command for when I want to assign all the BR heavies to hit all of the Fuel and Synthetic Fuel targets in the Ruhr. And I assign recon units to No. 106 PR Group to do strategic recon.

Don't forget that the number of AD's you can have active for an Air HQ is the rounded down average of the commander's Admin and Air grades. There are some stinky air commanders at the start of the scenario. For example, ACOM is a 2:4 so can only have three active AD's (not that I'd waste a good commander on No. 216 Air Transport and Ferry Group), whereas ACOM Foster is available with a 6:6 and therefore six active AD's. ACOM Benett is a 3:4, even though No. 8 (PFF) Group has the best BR air groups. Be judicious with your admin points, but replace the worst commanders as early as you can.
