Are beaches really defensible?

Post by vilcum »

I want to share the results of a beach landing with you ...

Image

this is from a PBEM++ game....and I almost can not imagine a worst situation for a landing ....
heavy mud, heavy rain, fort level 2, a whole pz division in defense (70%TOE after the battle) plus a successful activation of a pz grenadier division (75% ToE after battle) , with NO air support by any side due to heavy rain.

what kind of guns has that lonely TF? Nuclear powered rail guns?

...and after a thousand casualties and the morale 9 german general calls for a retreat????

In have no other explanation for this that the game is wired so no landing can be repulsed....and so defending any coast hex other than a city port is futile

My opponent -among other things- heavy mud impair panzers more than infantry, and the fort amounts really to nothing due the heavy engineer support

I do not say success must be imposible in this battle... but I fear that if defensive success is imposible so there is no point in defending coast...and that do not seem "right" for a simulation.

Any thoughts?

the key bit is that only a single regiment defends a beach hex so everything else there is wasted. The only time a full division will fight is if it is in a coastal port. So crudely you put the equivalent of 6 regiments into harms way and only one counted.

The secondary bit, the TF has huge guns. They fire first and will do a lot of damage - check the battle report. Even worse those now damaged/destroyed/disrupted elements are not going to be fighting when the Allied infantry turn up. Your heroic survivors did a number on the Americans but were probably just overwhelmed in the end. The lost VP could well win you the war.

But at core, never defend a beach with a division, its just a total waste of assets

also make sure you've picked up the rules for what happens when/if you counter-attack a beachhead hex
