early Production strategies for WA?

Post by Galdred »

I have a PBEM starting soon with WA, and I don't have much clues about their usual openings:
What should I focus on building before I can know what the Axis is up to (scenario is Global glory)?
How much supply and transport fleet do you usually build until France falls? How much research, and what do you tech?

Is it possible to prevent France from falling in Winter 1940 if the German player really focuses on this objective?

The one thing i know is that you can't do an opening theory in this game. Too much depends on what your opponents will build and how and where they will use it. One thing doesn't vary though: the need for transports and escorts to keep the convoys floating. I can't do a specific theory even for Japan which is rather easy in comparison as every time i start a game, i change strategy and it's more on the die rolls than on me in the first turns...i guess u'll have to practice a bit with the AI to find your own answers. [:)]

As GSchock has pointed out, early strategy is generally reactive. That said, I have found it prudent in the first turn to invest in inf and art (most often this pushes them over the threshold to the next level). I also always invest in ASW and keep investing until I have ascertained whether Germany will execute a serious sub war. If Germany manages to get two levels of evasion beyond ASW, it is VERY tough slogging to keep supply lines open. Do NOT let her get that far ahead..... I tend to find it is better to invest in ASW than to invest in too many escorts. Of course, you will need to keep an eye on your transport levels.

Generally, it is prudent to invest in a reasonable level of Fighter tech. This is useful for clearing German fighters, or forcing them to stay out of range (out of France while you are at L2 range in Global Glory). This makes it easier to launch amphib invasions.  On this last point, it is wise to invest into amphib tech early on if you can. Until you get to level 4, it is hard to present a credible threat to Germany without at least 2-3 paratroops.... You really do not wish to allow Germany to feel seceure in the West and the Med. If this occurs, she can concentrate a lot of forces against Russia and do a lot of damage....

Otherwise, the best way to find out is by playing against human opponents! (tough lessons are often the best lessons)
