Logistic 101 - why they are hungry?

Post by Xywa »

Hi,

I got 2 cities: Newcastle & Sunderland. Newcastle got SHQ, Sunderland got Supply Base, Rail, Transport Hub and Truck Station. There are 13 hex in between. As you see units in Sunderland are hungry (black dots), and I have no idea why. Sunderland got Dome-Farm II and Agri-Dome I. How it works? Do Sunderland need to send all the food to SHQ to Newcastle, and then Newcastle has to resent those food back to Sunderland to units? Why they are hangry if there is enough food everywhere, enough in storage?

Cannot add a screenshot yet as a new user.

All supplies need logistics points on every single hex between the SHQ and the Units.

Sunderland will have it's food retreived by the SHQ, before there is any hope of it reaching the Units.

Troops are on the main line between Newcastle and Sunderland just a hex from Sunderland, which has a tremendous excess of traffic and food points. Newcastle has a surplus of food, but due to a staff shortage, it does not produce all traffic points. I got [Pick-Up Issue] and [SHQ miss-item] flags on those units in Sunderland. All the colour maps [Current Pts] [Used Pts] [Initial Pts] etc. related to logistics show that there are points in this position. Isn't it that Sunderland's surplus food goes to Units in Sunderland? Does it have to go to SHQ Newcastle first and then back to the Sunderland unit? Is it possible on the logistics map to see which direction the problem is, because it looks like Sunderland >> Newcastle is fully operational, but the direction of Newcastle >> Sunderland is not anymore - and on the map I do not see where the problem is (on the same road ).

BTW. Great manual, I have seen it on website.

Yes. I think food has to go to the local SHQ (if you're using more than one) before it can be sent back out to units. I don't believe that sending resources back to an SHQ consumes Logistics points, but don't quote me on that...

There are many much longer threads on logistics, but in a nutshell, the various things you can try include:

1) Replace Dirt Road with a Sealed Road if it's too long (13 hexes doesn't seem like a lot), and add a Supply Station if it's REALLY long.
2) Try to avoid routing all Logistics traffic down one road coming out of any city with an SHQ.
3) Try moving your SHQ to see if that changes anything (I've not tried this, so I could be totally confused here).
4) Watch one of the longer videos on logistics! The system is deep and satisfying, and the UI offers you all the views you need to solve a problem, but is NOT intuitive, even after you dig down into the "Traffic Signs" screen where the nitty-gritty logistical details live!

Sending resources from zones to your SHQ does consume logistics points just like sending them out from your SHQ to your zones or units.

So, does reducing the logistics point demands to your outlying Zone Cities (e.g., by eliminating traffic jams or building railroads and railroad stations) reduce the logistical demands on your SHQ? Here's my bind:

Image

(I think) because of SHQ logistical limits, I'm now at the point where I can no longer upgrade units even if they're based in my capital. I have the resources and the industrial points, and the units are Regular military units, so am I correct in thinking it's a logistical bottleneck with my SHQ?

Which of the below options might fix this:

1) Just don't build any new Assets in outlying zones for a few turns (thus easing the logistical demands on my network)?

2) Should I go into my traffic screen and reduce traffic jams wherever I can by paving roads?

3) Or can I just improve some of my truck stations (or build rail lines and stations) in various Zones to generate more logistical points for my SHQ?

4) ???

Establishing a second SHQ sounds like a whole different rabbit hole, and my planet is only medium-sized, so I'll do anything I can to avoid that hassle. I'm near the end game stage, but my empire is about to collapse under the weight of the logistical demands on my SHQ!

I don't believe you need any logistics to build or upgrade units in your SHQ hex.

Hard to answer your question without more detail. Maybe post the save game?

Hopefully this link works. First time I've shared a file here, rather than just an image! Thanks for your help.

The troops in question are based in my HQ city of Echotown.

Your issue appears to be that you just don't have enough logistics points around your capital. You should definitely upgrade your truck station there and you also need to use traffic signs more to push more logistics points in the directions that you need them. The bottleneck is the roads leading right out of your capital. I did a very quick pass on adding in traffic signs that should help improve things some. Also don't build any more resource generating buildings in cities outside your capital as you are using a lot of your logistics points to push resources back from cities to your SHQ: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1h6SxQJ ... sp=sharing
