Using mobile shield generators

Expensive late game kit. But I've found GR mobile shields early in the game on occasion and I'm never entirely sure what to do with them. The last one I had got overrun and killed by some spiders which didn't seem ideal.

Are there any tips or best practices people have for effective use of mobile shields?
