3 Questions to ICARUS Mod

Post by Cfant »

Hi!

I just read the explanations to the Mod, which sounds quite interesting.

To me, however, the changes sound like they make a lot of sense in terms of logic, but make life much harder for Austria and the Ottomans. Both are usually under massive pressure in Vanilla too - can they really hold out in practice in multiplayer until 1918? The NM rules and the Arab revolt sound pretty deadly... What are your experiences?

Also, I once heard that the recapture of certain NM objectives only gives back half the NM loss (which makes sense, because the shock of losing Przemysl or Verdun is of course massive), but reading today there was no mention of that. Do you really get everything back?

And is the mod compatible with the current SC WW1 version (1.14)? Thanks in advance and best regards!

Thanks for your interest in the Icarus mod. Let me answer your questions.

- In fact, I am currently playing the Central Powers in the 1916 campaign of the Icarus mod, in a match against Old Crow Balthazor which he has recorded on his YouTube channel. He has posted links to every episode so far in the this forum. The Central Powers are not having any difficulty winning (and indeed I will probably make a few adjustments to war weariness factors to assist the Entente in this campaign after this play-test is done). Check out the game on his YT channel. The 1914 campaign seems balanced as well from all of my test matches so far.

- In the regular game, there are only a few NM objectives in France (notably Verdun and Paris) which the original owner can win back half the NM points be recapturing them. In the Icarus mod, almost all NM objectives near major powers borders can be recaptured with full NM points restored to the original owner. See Section 7.3 on "Reversing NM GAins and Losses" in the Explanation of Modifications document that accompanies the mod in my Dropbox (link given at the top of the thread in the Mods and Scenarios sub-form, above).

- Yes, the latest iteration of the mod (Version 6.4) was designed based on SC WW1 Version 1.14. When patches come out, I update the mod accordingly, so it always runs on the latest version of the underlying game engine.

Cheers,

Michael

The game made the minors and weaker nations equal to the strong, perhaps due to other reasons. The mod is nearer to history.

If you actually go through the history of WW1 with a totally unbiased and neutral outlook-
Germany was in top game in all years except last 3 months of the war
UK was strong but in the first 15 months fielded a very small colonial army, only from early 1916 it became the behemoth it did
Italy was mostly useless
Austro-Hungary was mostly useless
Romania was thoroughly useless
Bulgaria punched way above weight as did Serbia
Russia was mostly useless, except in brief times like the 1914 battles vs Austria and the Pyrrhic Brusilov offensive
US was mostly useless except in terms of the massive loans and supplies, only from mid 1918 did sufficient number of Americans enter the field.
Belgium was mainly a political entity than actual battle-worthy army, same with Portugal and others.
