Newbie questions

Post by jallison86 »

I recently installed the game and am playing through the campaign as the Allies against the AI as a learning exercise. Most things make sense, but I've got a couple questions. Sorry if these are answered in the manual, but a search didn't turn up anything obvious.

1. What is the strike range of aircraft? There are a number of references to strike range in the manual, but nowhere can I find what the range actually is for various aircraft types. The immediate cause for this question was an incident in early 1942. US and Japan are at war, there's a Japanese CL 4 hexes off Oahu, and I've got a US maritime bomber unit stationed on the island. But I cannot direct it to attack the CL. The unit has 1 strike available and 11 action points, so the only thing I can figure is that the ship is out of range?

2. Where's the rest of the US Pacific Fleet? The Japanese staged the expected Pearl Harbor attack in December '41, sinking the Arizona, California, and Oklahoma. But where are the other ships that were in Pearl at that time, the Nevada, Pennsylvania, etc?

Again, sorry if these are dumb questions. I'm trying to get a feel for the game through playing. Reading through the entire manual before diving in seemed too much like work.

Thanks!

Hi Jeff.

There are no dumb questions.
:)

1) Range is not everything. Weather condition is just as important. You can't attack targets in bad weather zones. Without any more information I would guess that the enemy vessel was protected from the bad weather, and therefor you weren't able to attack it, even though action point, range and everything else would have allowed it during "good" weather conditions.
2) Not every single naval unit represents a single ship. Think of them more as of Naval groups, named with the name of a single ship.

Yep, you're right. I went and checked and the hex the CL is in is indeed experiencing storms. The storm effect is very subtle on my monitor and I missed it.

That does make sense given the map scale and lack of stacking. I just need to get my head out of War in the Pacific mode :)

Thanks.

Hi Jeff

1. Either in the Unit Purchase screen, or by right clicking on a unit and selecting its Properties, you can see its attributes including for air units their strike ranges.

Makes perfect sense, thank you!
