Are the Carriers - any side - already loaded with aircraft? If not how do you load them ? Thanks in advance.

They are loaded but you have a separate strength indicator for the fighter wing than the carrier itself. You have to reinforce several times to repair the carrier and replenish the air wing.

This is crucial and a common mistake for new players. If attacking ships or land units - you must switch modes to naval bombardment. However, make sure you have ground fighters or another carrier set to CAP mode to escort bombers or defend against carrier or bomber attacks on your opponents next turn.

Carriers can also use 'Mixed Mode' which would allow them to attack in their turn at half effectiveness, and defend with Cap interceptions, also at half effectiveness, in their opponents turn. Because of the half strength effectiveness of both modes, I would assume that similar results would play out with say 4 CVs all in mixed mode attacking and defending (with Cap next turn) versus 4 CVs with two attacking in Naval tactical mode and two in full Cap/fighter mode.
