World at War Tournament: Stalling Tactics

Post by Mwhit299 »

Has anyone dealt with another player stalling in this WWII tournament? My opponent Tichtg has played 2 turns in 3 weeks. It is very frustrating, and it seems like every time I join a tournament, most my games are like this. My opponent was overzealous and then decided to stall. As a result, I can't gain the vicory points I should be getting. Wish there was a better way to prevent this.

My opponent hasn't played any turns at all. I don't know why one would sign up for the tournament if not intending to play.
There should be an entrance fee that is forfeited if one doesn't play after a certain amount of time.

Yeah it's very frustrating. Sorry you are going through it as well. I guess I'm fortunate my opponent at least played a few turns :) You would think the person would concede if they tried an aggressive strategy and it didn't go well.

I know it is frustrating, all I can add is that their stalling might not do them any favours as they may well find themselves kicked from the next round of the tournament, and with you gaining 75 points per game.

Bill,

Appreciate the update. I'm going to sound like a broken record again but continued stalling and lack of sportsmanship. I'm playing the BBS and the same pattern of stalling and selectively only playing the game they are doing better in. So the very first message I get from BBS is "Let's play as many turns as possible to get the most possible points." I love it and we are playing a lot until both games start to go sideways for BBS (1942-1945 Race to Victory). My Allies land in Bordeaux and slowly advancing almost to Paris. The Russians don't lose Stalingrad and are rapidly reconquering the East. They are outside Warsaw and getting into the Balkans. BBS has messaged me great game and "aghh" things look bleak. However, he stops playing for over a week and has done this on multiple occasions. (We are on turn 51)

Then for the game where I'm the Axis we have only played 34 turns. This game I have conquered Leningrad, Stalingrad, Baku, Egypt, Persia, and destroyed the Allied Landings in Europe. Plus the Allies have had their navies decimated with the Axis having more ships and sunk 3 allied Carriers. Additionally, I was beginning the German drive on Moscow and the Africa corps was driving to India to link up the my Japanese in India.

I do understand people have schedules, but it has become such a pattern over all the tournaments I have played in. It makes players go really aggressive to get knockout blows then they just slow roll to stay in it.

I really wish there was a sportsmanship rating. Because my troops are right on the doorstep of major points and my opponent doesn't want to lose his points and just stops playing. Very frustrating but wanted to bring this to everyone else's attention. Love to hear if other folks have had similar experiences.

Yes you are fortunate. I have had 2 'opponents', both of them haven't played a single round. It doesn't make sense for me to sign up in tournaments anymore. There are better ways to find players who really like to play.

Unfortunately the tournaments have always been full of scammers, ghosters, and unsportsmanlike behavior. I play MP exclusively but never in tournaments because of this.
Sure they get punished in points for being inactive, but you get punished with time lossed and frustration waiting and wondering.
It's so easy to PM someone if you are going to miss some days because of real life...takes a minute...but ghosting and non communication are too common to be an outlier.
Anyways I been seeing these complaints for years here...nothing has changed apparently.

Old Crow,
Love all your posts and strategy discussion. Yeah it hasn't changed much. I'm so pissed to see that I only gained 4 extra points than the BBS because of his stalling and selective playing. I should have taken screenshots to show the beatdown I put on him only to be given 4 more points :) It's almost comical at this point. I think I'm done after this tournament. So much wasted time and frustration. Wish everyone luck in the tourney and may your opponent be honorable ;)
