It will be really nice if Slitherine can host an official ladder (ELO or not) for the players. When people start a PBEM they can check an option to be ranked or not. It may require some kind of timing of each player, but preferably not requiring mirrored games. Pro: solve any game balancing issues. Con: People are forced to play to the end, which is not fun after certain point of the game, which is also an issue of this tournament. After all, playing the game is about fun.

I remember the days when I played Close Combat 2 multiplayer to climb up the world ranking/ladder to the top 50. That was a very rewarding experience, a lot of fun, and a huge driving force to keep me playing that game.

With an official ladder, people can take their time to play when they can, and see the strength of their opponent when they match up. I imaging it can be a lot of prestige and bragging rights when someone say: "I played the world's number 3 and I beat the crap out of him, blah blah..."

Are there any chances for extra slots to become available?

Thanks LoneRunner, and it might very well be that additional rounds would be better, however since this one will already take approximately 4.5 months as is, there is some desire to see how this one works out first before running a much longer first official tournament, if necessary.

Some good points on the rounds and the values of rounds as well, and we are discussing as currently there are some limitations, e.g. I don't believe this is currently an option with the tournament settings, but something to look into and consider for sure.
Thank you Hubert for considering my ideas. If nothing else, consider a single elimination tournament. With 64 players you would have a winner in only six rounds. Or 128 players in seven rounds. Most people would only have to play two games. Maybe the last game published in an AAR.

Player pairings could be seeded according to their rank on The Land's ELO tournament. Anyone not in the ELO tournament would be considered a beginner and paired accordingly.

Do I need to bother to say, I'm in.

There must be lights burning brighter somewhere
Got to be birds flying higher in a sky more blue
If I can dream of a better land
Where all my brothers walk hand in hand
Tell me why, oh why, oh why can't my dream come true?
Oh why?
There must be peace and understanding sometime
Strong winds of promise that will blow away the doubt and the fear
If I can dream of a warmer sun
Where hope keeps shining on everyone
Tell me why, oh why, oh why won't that sun appear?
We're lost in a cloud
With too much rain
We're trapped in a world
That's troubled with pain
But as long as a man
Has the strength to dream
He can redeem his soul and fly
Deep in my heart, there's a trembling question
Still, I am sure that the answer's, answer's gonna come somehow
Out there in the dark, there's a beckoning candle, yeah
And while I can think, while I can talk
While I can stand, while I can walk
While I can dream, oh please let my dream
Come true, oh
Right now
Let it come true right now
Oh yeah

Just a note about the 'new player' disadvantage. I looked through the WaW Elo tournament games to find all games where a new player (not previously participated in the WaW or WiE ELO Tournaments) played someone who had. There are 10 such games and only 2 of them were won by the player who is new to competitive multiplayer. They were not normally playing 'difficult' opponents, either.

I would assume longer game can lst about 250 turns, so 125 per players. 6 weeks are 42 days, so one would have to play around 3 turns a day with each side, which equals to 6 total. Am I right?

Maybe I have missed the answer, but is he right?
If he is right, I would never have a chance to be part of a tournament like this. I simply haven't the time to play multiple turns a day over 6 weeks or 4 and a half month.

Well It's been 24 hours and no sign of any opponent. Could we perhaps incorporate a substitute system so that if people do not start their game, say within 48 hours of the tourny start time they can be substituted? We need to be playing, on average, a couple of turns a day to complete the rounds and they are taking the place of people who would have like to have played but could not get in.

No turn from my opponent yet too. His user is not in the forum so no chance to contact him.
Maybe the players which do not do a turn within the first 5 days should be replaced by someone on a waiting list or another player with the same issue.

Sorry to hear about that gentlemen, I've asked Matrix what the protocol on this is as from what I understand I don't think players can be replaced. However if they are indeed a no show, I can say that you will get the BYE points of 75 for that game.

As promised, I wanted to mention the scoring system:

DECISIVE VICTORY = 100 points
MAJOR VICTORY = 80 points
MINOR VICTORY = 70 points
TACTICAL VICTORY = 60 points
STALEMATE = 50 points

Each victory is based on the associated victory conditions, as can be reviewed by the in game victory conditions page, and using a mirrored game system helps, where if you win one game and lose in another game, how you win and how you lose will affect your final points for the round, e.g. win better in one game lose better in the other game than your opponent did in the game he lost and your combined points will be better than your opponent for the round and so on.

For games that don't completely finish, the victory condition scoring system is assessing each turn looking to see what the current position each side is in, e.g. are they in a Major Victory position, or perhaps a Minor Victory position. If you are losing, holding your opponent to one of the lowest victory positions is ideal to minimize your point losses for the round.

However the victory condition scoring system doesn't kick in right away, it needs to reach a particular time threshold in game before it does. Until this threshold is reached we take this into account by scoring the game in a way that rewards the player that has returned the most turns. They could be losing, but if they are the most active they will receive the most points for the game, the bye value of 75 points. Not knowing when the victory condition scoring system kicks is purposeful, as it should prevent exploits as well as prevent players from just sitting on their position because they are winning.

But if you think you've played far enough and you suspect the victory condition scoring system has kicked in, and decide to sit on your winning position at that point, the server will penalize you for not returning your turns and lower your final score as well. So in this case sitting on a winning position is potentially penalized as well, and this gives your opponent the chance to counter that position until the game is over or the round ends.

Hope this helps,
Hubert

Just a follow up, from my understanding with how past tournaments have been run, this can happen, players not playing their turns, and this is one of the reasons players are kicked and why we then have a bye setting if we end up with odd numbers and a player doesn't have an opponent for the next round.

Add players to the tournament is not an option, I imagine it is difficult to know exactly when a player will start playing their turns, and just how committed they are, and this is why players are only potentially kicked at the end of the round.

I can appreciate the frustration for sure, and I just wanted to follow up with you guys on this.
