1940 attack on Russia

Post by Umeu »

Early attack on Russia as done by cpuncher vs hamburgermeat, Is this still considered unbeatable? Or has the game changed too much since then?

since then, the USSR has been well boosted, in my opinion, an early attack is not profitable now, more careful preparation is needed

Agree.
Back then, it was easy to get technology bumps.
Germans came into Russia with +3 Tigers, then +4 Panthers way ahead of The Reds by difference of at least 2.
Was a slaughterhouse, the Tanks were like Brad Pitt in Fury, waxing the board.

Played one game against HamburgerHill, dude have +5, in 1943, he coasted to all Russian Capital spots.

Luck/Rolls/Weather are critical.
I played JackMack, I had Gerry's Panzer +3 and all upgraded in May 1941, was a joke.
Felt bad for them, as a I fired away.

Sucks a--- when The Gerries settle in for the Winter, wait, wait, wait.
Big units are beside each other.
Then Joe gets the Spring thaw first, blasting Bunta Boys Armies upfront, ugly.
Drawing blood first, is a big deal. There's even a movie called "First Blood", lol.

I was always a fan of Telly, blasted Colonel Hessler on his broken up tank.

got the same feeling. It still seems strong if Allies don't expect it, but Russia shouldn't fall so easily, giving the Brits and USA enough time to do damage.

I just came back to the game after a long hiatus, so take my advice with a grain of salt, but I agree that it is time to reconsider the 1940 attack. The USSR gets more MPPs, US diplomacy is affected by japanese gains in China, paratroopers have been neutered, and I think I read something about randomly spawning partisans? Back then, I remember being too poor to even reform all of my discounted armies/corps.

I'm still worried about german units getting crazy experience, taking advantage of the infantry weapons gap for longer (like japan vs China but without all the mountainous terrain and an even greater gap between HQs), and panzers overpowering level 0 infantry weapon armies/corps. But France would need to fall really early to justify going for such an attack, so early that the USSR doesn't have time to annex the Baltic States.

Not sure what the best german plan would be though? They would have much more time being able to target the USSR capitals, but the USSR gets so much more MPP earlier with a 1940 attack that the germans might just get outmaterialed. If targeting MPPs, germans would either want cut off UK shipments to Arkhangelsk or make a mad dash to the Caucasus. But if there's no launching pad from Hungary or Romania, it'll take awhile longer to get to the oil. So maybe the best thrust would be north, while army groups center and south steadily chew through any soviets? Maybe the germans should produce artillery in early 1940, since the germans will be moving alot slower and artillery is produced alot quicker/cheaper than bombers.

Japan would definitely want to commit to the USSR attack as well and NOT trigger the USA mobilization script in China. Maybe pick up mobility and bombers, plus 1 chit into amphibious research early enough so that they'll be ready for a limited pacific offensive before the USA joins around the autumn of 1941
