Lopsided in favor of Germany?

Fury Games has now signed with Matrix Games, and we are working together on the next Strategic Command. Will use the Slitherine PBEM++ server for asynchronous multi-player.

Lopsided in favor of Germany?

Post by lkendter »

I've tried the allies more then once at Green.
Slaughter in Poland and France is expected. French morale collapse to fast, so not surprised.

However, I'm seeing ahistorical stuff happen.
Italy crossing the French border and slaughtering France.
Big chunk of Britain in Egypt. The Africa Corp slaughtered me despite more troops on my side. I quit that game when I was going to have to waste a fortune to save the air by operationally moving it out of Egypt. There weren't enough ground units left.
Russia lost way to many troops the first couple of turns. Probably going to have to concede the majority of Russia to Germany...

Is my play sucking, or is the game lopsided to Axis?

Maybe your game still has room for major improvement is a better way to put it. [:)]

Very winnable for Allies.

Bad news for you.
Against the AI, it's easier playing the Allies.

Ikendter,

I think it likely your strategy and perspective just needs a little adjusting.

Remember that Italy did in fact attack France, but failed due to the fact that the French had troops there. If you, as the French, choose to not put troops there, then you have left yourself vulnerable. You need to cover it, although it is tempting to just use everything you have vs Germany. A single well dug-in unit will probably suffice. And if the Italians make a serious effort there, they have left themselves vulnerable in North Africa.

Egypt is tough, to succeed you need to move some troops from the UK (the AI doesn't do Sealion), and you have to acquire a good understanding of the supply rules. Supply is scanty in the desert, you will need 2 HQ's to have a chance, and most of your airforce. Move navy there as well, and kill-off the Italian Navy. Now you can conduct amphibious operations at will, and force him to divert troops from where he really wants them.

The Soviets are going to lose alot of units early. The border units appear when Germany declares war, those are going to get destroyed, don't sweat it. Don't try to defend too far forward, that's where the Germans are concentrated and at max supply. Once they are 15-20 hexes in, they will be strung out and low on supply. That's when you want to fight them. Select good defensive terrain, cities and forests give defensive bonuses, keep AA and rocket artillery behind to support. It is also important to invest early in Infantry Weapons research, as well as Anti Aircraft. If your units are upgraded in these areas, they will be much tougher.

Remember that you only have to buy time until the US arrives in force, economics are in your favor. Once the US arrives, the Germans will have to divert significant forces to deal with them, and that's when the Soviets can turn the tide.

Against a human opponent, things are different. Only experience can prepare you for the different situations you will face, and you must be flexible.

That gave be a big clue. I'll have to work more heavily to understand supply.

The biggest problem with the AI, is that there is little variation in its strategy.
It also both over commits and under commits at various situations/targets and has a poor sense of dynamic reaction to situations.

How do you break a fortress?

Hit Tobruk before the Africa Corp arrived. Hit with multiple ships, planes, etc and I didn't even to one point on the Italians.

You need to start by reducing his entrenchment. Medium Bombers are great for that, each strike reduces entrenchment by 1 and reduces his morale by 50%. Use your corps for the first couple ground attacks to soak-off entrenchment, each attack reduces it by 1. After it reaches 0, move in with the big boys (armies, armor, and tactical bombers) to finish it off. You can either use ships or strategic bombers to attack the resources he is drawing supply from (the city of Tobruk and its port) to make it so that he cannot draw replacements if you do not kill him outright on the first turn. Repeat process until it is dead. It is best to isolate Tobruk by surrounding it, that way it cannot draw supply from any nearby HQs. Tobruk is a tough nut to crack, it may take a few turns.

If you right click on the unit and hit properties it will show you the units attributes (including de-entrenchment/moral) on the upper right.
