SOE:Yugoslavian Pro-Allied Coup

Post by DarkHorse2 »

The Pro-Allied Yugoslavian coup seems to come out of nowhere and fails to include the historic prerequisites.

1. Yugoslavia signing the Tripartite Pact! (this is a big one!)
2. The Pro-Allied coup was successful - this was not a given as many coups fail!
2.1 Even after the coup, there was movement within the gov't to continue to support the signing of the Tripartite Pact; however, at this point Hitler was outraged and withdrew the German diplomats in lieu of an immediate military resolution.

(1) above would have required....

1.1. Germany inviting Yugoslavia to sign the pact. (which historically began in mid-late 1940...)
1.2. Yugoslavia being receptive -or- succumbing to pressure to sign.

(1.2) would have depended on the following factors...

1.2.1. France surrendered (you have this one covered in DE 104)
1.2.2. Yugoslavia being politically and geographically isolated.
1.2.2.1 (Italy, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria have all signed the Pact)
1.2.2.2 On 17 February, Bulgaria and Turkey signed an agreement of friendship and non-aggression.
1.2.3. The Second Vienna Award - further establishing Germany/Italy as defacto arbitrators in the Balkans.
1.2.4. The UK refusing to provide aid or military support (like they had with Greece).
1.2.5. Italian-Greek war. The fact Italy was not winning actually further pushed Yugoslavia toward Germany as they anticipated German intervention would be forthcoming.

(i think each of these factors should have resulted in a gradual increase in Yugoslavian mobilization -> Axis until they agreed to sign the pact).
Having steadily fallen within the orbit of the Axis during 1940 after events such as the Second Vienna Award, Yugoslavia followed Bulgaria and formally joined the Tripartite Pact on 25 March 1941. Senior Serbian air force officers opposed to the move staged a coup d'état and took over in the following days.
Following the fall of France in May 1940, Yugoslavia's Regent Prince Paul and his government saw no way of saving the Kingdom of Yugoslavia except through accommodation with the Axis powers. Although Germany's Adolf Hitler was not particularly interested in creating another front in the Balkans, and Yugoslavia itself remained at peace during the first year of the war, Benito Mussolini's Italy had invaded Albania in April 1939 and launched the rather unsuccessful Italo-Greek War in October 1940. These events resulted in Yugoslavia's geographical isolation from potential Allied support.

Anyways, this was a fairly involved issue and the following DE 104 is a gross over-simplication.
