Maps compatibility?

Post by ncc1701e »

Maybe my question is stupid. But, if I would like to start a new scenario.

May I start designing the map using TOAW 3?
And, should it work seamless to integrate it later in TOAW 4 and finish the scenario?

By chance, is there anything more (in terms of design) than the map that could be done in TOAW 3 before importing it in TOAW 4?

Thanks

I can't see why you would want to. TOAW IV has larger map sizes to begin with. But if you do I'd like to
know myself, if it works.

This is the question raised above.....will it be seemless and doable?

I'm guessing that all the scenario values, including the map, would be readable by TOAW IV and that changes could then be made
as if it were a TOAW IV scenario to begin with. But that's just my guess. I did a mod on one of the classic scenario's and it worked
out really great, no problems at all.

EDIT: I've bolded the above verbage to designate the phrase I'd like to appoligize for.......I mistook you for a beta
tester dude.

Any map done in TOAW3 should work in TOAW4. They are just making a larger map possible and making the graphics look different. As far as I know there will be no new terrain. But I wouldn't go any farther than making a map. From what I can tell some things may be done differently in 4. However, since no one can tell us what is really going on everything I say is guess work which means anything you do is subject to becoming wasted time. [;)]

Here is the real head scratcher. You are supposed to be able to submit new scenarios that may be released with TOAW4. But if you don't even know what has changed then how the hell can you make the scenario? Especially if there are naval units since that has changed dramatically (or so I've heard). I guess if you belong to some special inner circle you get special treatment? I don't know. [:D]

From what I understand those scenario designers who want to submit a new scenario will be made a beta
tester and will be supplied with the latest versions of everything. Including the game engine. Send an
email to Tamas K. and volunteer to design a scenario and see what happens. That's what I'd do.

No worries, I was asking to know if I could gain time while TOAW IV is in development.

Right now, I am already beta tester for another Matrix game. It would not be fair to apply for TOAW IV beta team since I will not have time to test it. On the other hand, creating a scenario is entertaining and it is a kind of pause for me.

TOAW3 scenarios will work with TOAW4, but there will be changes and additions in TOAW4 that can make TOAW3 scenarios under-optimised, or do not have the exact same balance the designer intended.

So, even if you make a full-fledged scenario in TOAW3 now, your efforts will not be wasted, as you will be able to load it up in #4 when it is released or when you join the beta team, and make changes you deem necessary (if any).

However, if you do not want to deal with that, then indeed just work on the map, and you can finish the scenario when you have access to TOAW4

or when you join the beta team

Thanks Tamas, out of curiosity, once the game I am tested is out, how do you apply to join the beta?

We will have a recruitment drive announced when we feel the game is ready. I would tell you what is my estimate on when that is happening, but I don't want circumstances proving me wrong again, so I won't :)
