Now THIS is a promotion...

Post by Admiral Delabroglio »

Hello

Maybe I already noticed and commented on this :

If you choose a light cavalry that has already been improved in combat and "upgrade" it into heavy cavalry, regardless on its strength, it turns into a 4 strength heavy cavalry. I checked with a 6 factor light cavaly. It becomes a 4 strength unit.

Likewise, If you choose a regular infantry that has already been improved and "upgrade" it into Guards, regardless on its strength, it turns into a 4 strength unit. I also checked with a 6 factor infantry. It becomes a 4 strength unit.

Finally, the game states that a Guard unit cannot be a skirmisher (weird rule according to me, the "Chasseurs de la Garde" were probably skirmishers) and prevents you from selecting a Guard unit and upgrade it with skirmishing ability. However, if by mistake you click on a skirmisher and choose it to turn it into a Guard infantry, even though the unit is not highlighted with a yellow border, you can, and the unit is stripped from its skirmisher ability while turned into a Guard unit.

Maybe there should be a warning such as "you will loose the skirmisher ability" in the last case, and "the promotions acquired on the battlefield will be lost" in the former cases.

Of course, the player can pay attention. But mis-clicking sometimes happens.

Best regards

Well, you have found a glitch, or at least a grey area in the rules! I'll ask Glenn about this. Perhaps this behavior should be changed. In particular I am not certain about the light cavalry upgrade.

That is perhaps an error. I'll have to ask Glenn about it. I suppose that we should not allow a player to upgrade a skirmisher-equipped unit into a guard unit on the grounds that it's not a good move for the player.

On the whole I think that the "no skirmishers" rule in guard units is a good one. It's not a perfect fit historically, but I think that it's more right than not. That is just my two cents' worth.

Well, after speaking with Glenn, the game is working as designed. At least, we're going to leave these upgrades as they are.
