Pilot Mgt - Or Lack Of

Post by jeffk3510 »

Can anyone give a very very simple run down of what works for them on pilot trying....I do it but I'm not sure how effective I am at it...

I play stock AE btw.. and please don't assume that I would know this or that...

I have the (R) squadrons on the WC as my main training units. Often maxed out with rookie pilots and 90% training on the mission best suited for that aircraft. Every two weeks I check each unit and when a pilot reaches 50 EXP, normally by this time the trained skill is around late 60's early 70's, I transfer him to General Reserve and replace him with a new rookie. I have leaders with high admin scores for these squadrons. ATM I have healthy pools of well trained pilots ready for action.

The inspiration values for leaders is one of the most important factors for training.  Admin skill is good for keeping planes in good repair.

I train pilots much the same way Cantona2 does.  When the USN replacement carriers show up, I transfer the squadrons to shore and use them to train pilots.  I use the inshore ASW units (arrive with Kingfishers) to train patrol pilots.  By 1944 I have more USN pilots than I know what to do with.  The other services are a little leaner, but I generally have plenty of pilots for all units.

When the supply of 50 exp pilots gets to be enough, I leave pilots in training.  I can get some up to 60 exp before moving them to the Reserves.  I have some patrol units that arrive in theater maxed out with pilots, all above 55 exp with 60-70 skills in search and ASW.  Switching some of the inshore squadrons to SBDs and training them for land bombing, I have a pool of pilots with good land bombing skill I can use for the PB4Ys.  The IJN has been so thoroughly decimated that I don't need patrol squadrons, I need the Navy VPB units for extra heavy bombers.

There are many threads which already deal with this subject. One which the OP might care to look at is:

That is more or less what I do.  Just double checking.  Thanks for the link Alfred.

Bill,

You say "When the supply of 50 exp pilots gets to be enough, I leave pilots in training." My question is, what is enough?

I think I probably train too long, but that is because I find it really tedious to keep harvesting a few pilots at a time. I now go through my trainers every 3 months - yes, months. At that point I basically take every pilot in the squadron and replace them all with rookies.

Slightly OT but has anyone ever run out of replacement pilots?  I was in 1944 of the ironman and noticed that when i tried to fill up my training squadrons with replacements I often don't have any avaialbe.  this problem was not limitied to one country.

Hi,
that is the new pilot bug
If you have reached a certain point  (can´t tell the numbers), you can first NOT fill the training crews, later it get worse...
at one point you can´t fill your combat crews with pilots....
Don't tickle yourself with some moralist crap thinking we have some sort of obligation to help these people. We're there for our self-interest, and anything we do to be 'nice' should be considered a courtesy dweebespit

I run training squadrons on the west coast for rookies, training them up to 50 exp.  After that, those pilots get pulled and replacement comes into that squadron.  I have rear area squadrons where I do Mission > Training.  Example, I'll have a FG covering a port with a lot of shipping.  Those squadrons will be set to Escort: CAP 30, Train 30, Rest 20.  This continues the training and allows me to focus all my 60+ exp pilots for front line duty.  I usually rotate out various ace's and double aces and place them in these rear guard squadrons to help keep the squadron Exp Average up.   It sounds like an extra layer of management, but once you know what you are looking for, it only takes a couple minutes to hop into a Pilot screen and make the required changes, and you only have to do this every 2-3 game weeks.

Thanks for that info. I had no idea that the pilot bug was back and in a different form. can you provide additional details on this bug and how it gets worse? Anyone have suggested workarounds? I wsa moving all my pilots out of some training squadrons to reserves and leaving the squdron emtpy so that I could have some reinforcements.

What 'new pilot bug' are you referring to????
If there are bugs, they should be reported through the Support forum or they wont be looked into.
