RE: How do I start?

Post by kris279 »

Ok, this days I got finally time to start playing.

First issue I have is the resolution - I found something in the net to set it to 1920x1080 but it did not work. Looks the same as before. Second, the map is moving awefully slowly if I try to scroll with the mouse.

I used following line by rightclicking the desktop shortcut: -wd -pxf1920 -pyf1080 -archive -deepColor -multiaudio -dd_sw -altFont

Did nothing. And yes,I left one space in between. Any ideas? After watching some old "lets plays" I think I understood some basic ideas of the game, however, I would like to set the resultion right first.

Look at the 'switch thread' thread on this same page. If no help go to the Tech Support sub-forum, there are many threads there discussing the matter. I couldn't be any help with the switches as I'm in Win7 and don't use switches.

Do as rustysi suggests and look at the other thread. You'll find several examples of resolution options and switch settings to get you game going in no time.

Yes, tried that already. Did not work(posted over there), really not getting where I should copy in this line. It seems it is not directly from the desktop icon. Don't have another way to start the game except going into the matrix folder, searching for the exe file and doubleclick it. Do I need to make a copy of the exe and put it on desktop? [&:]

Forgot how complicated this old games are(and where) to make them run properly. Still remember the autoexec.bat tinkering on the old DOS systems to make something run.....

Create a shortcut on the desktop - that's where the switches go.

Or.....you could try loading it into High Memory. [;)]

Thanks Kull. Well, I tried various things. Nothing really does anything.

I modified the shortcut on the desktop - nothing.

I modified the quick start button in the pull down menu. Nothing.

It is the Original game downloaded from the matrix games website - Version One.Zero.Zero.One Zero Seven Nine from July Twenty Zero Nine (Sorry, but this a bit ridiculous forum software does not allow me to post numbers....)

I copy/pasted the entire line, then I read somewhere it should NOT be copy/pasted, so it typed it directly - nothing.

A not very promising start......

You need to upgrade to the latest version. Then the switches should work....GP

Ouch. I thought I got the last game for this price. Updater does not work(tells me to contact Matrix games)..... just great.

Seems auto update does not work. Which version do I need and where do I get it from. Or do I need to contact support?

Try rebooting your computer. Then go to the game and try updating again. If that doesn't work, reinstall the game, reboot and then try the updater. It will take time but be patient. Once finished with the updater, you should be able to make the new shortcut and setup switches....GP

No luck. Did as you said, reboot, nothing. De-install. Re-Install. Update - nothing. Thanks for your help btd64! Appreciated.

This nervs. Contacting support now. Let's see what they say. But leaving a 9 year old game unpatched on the servers for download is actually a bit of a dealbreaker for me.Especially with that steep pricetag they are asking for. Wasted 3 hours trying to get full screen...

Check

You have to use a shortcut directly to the .exe

Target:
"C:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -SingleCpuOrders -deepColor -dd_sw -altFont

NOT

Target:
"C:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition\autorun.exe" -SingleCpuOrders -deepColor -dd_sw -altFont

The number one mistake made.

The "WhatsNew.pdf" in the game folder lists the different switches that can be used.

Do not copy switches from "WhatsNew.pdf", because the "-" used by .pdf is not recognized by the game.

-btd64 - reboot? No? How? [:)]

-MakeeLearn Yes, at first I did copy them to be honest(was reading the "WhatsNew.pdf"). After reading the "switch" thread I typed it in by myself, first resolution only to see if that is working. Yes, always started a game to see if there is any difference. Did not work.

At the moment I am a sitting duck, waiting. Matrix support did not reply yet. But it seems it is an issue with an old version of the game(why do they not put an actually patched version there for download?)

Regarding actual version - found there is a download column with patches for Witp:AE. The lastest one is this from Mar 2015, Version 1.01.24 . Can I download that one or do I need to update the game patch by patch(as it was before with some older games)?´

EDIT: Downloaded last patch(from Dez 2014), in game version becomes (One. Seven . Eleven. Twentyfour)- sorry - software does not let me post "phone numbers" [>:]. Is this the actual version? Still, I made a copy of the exe file and dragged it onto the desktop. Modified to change resolution - nothing...... [&:][&:][&:][>:]

A great link, with pictures, can be found at

tm.asp?m=4409342&mpage=1&key=&#4409528

Make sure you create a shortcut from the correct .exe. There are 2 of them.

-Lecivius

My god, this was it. I actually used the wrong .exe file(as they look similar I did not scroll down all the way in the Matrix Folder).
Now it is possible to modify.

Then I had a further issue with no response in game. More or less all the time I used it in Full screen mode in any resolution. It was unplayable. Changed it to Windowed(1920x1080) and it worked after I set that the windows toolbar would stay hidden(otherwise the map was covered by the toolbar).

I am using this line, I think it should do the job:

-dd_sw -w -px1920 -py1080 -altFont -deepColor -r

Thanks for all that advice!
