Game is slow and lags

Post by U2 »

Hi all,

bought the game way back when it was released but never played it. Did play WITP like crazy though. Anyway, fast forward to 2024 and I just installed it. It feels like I sometimes have to wait a few seconds before I am able to select something. Sometimes it takes 5-10 seconds after I press smething (like search arch on the map) before anything happens. To play the monster campaign with delays of 2-10 seconds whenever I want to click, and damn there will be many clicks, is just suicide. I got a two year old gaming computer so I dont think it is to blame. Play War Thunder on it with max graphics.

My brother has an older laptop and is suffering even more playing the game. He just bought it on sale.

Any thoughts or help greatly appreciated. BTW, was a beta tester for the original WITP. Times flies...

Cheers
Dan

Are you playing in windowed mode or full screen? I have never been able to get rid of the lag in recent versions while playing full screen; but it works fine in windowed mode.

Go to the Tech section and read up on the use of switches to correct game issues, especially slow performance. There is even an thread called Slow Performance that has all the info you need and lots of screenshots to illustrate what to do. Just make sure all your switches go into a shortcut that points directly to the game exe file, not the Autorun.exe which just brings up an abandoned menu.

Hey Dan,
Although I've owned the game for 15+ years, I've never found the time to get through the steep learning curve to enjoy what the game has to offer. With that said, I have installed the game several times, and have experienced the lags you're experiencing.

My most recent install was just last week. I'm operating a reasonably quick machine (on Windows 10).

I used the SeaBee Utility mentioned here to create my launch shortcut.

I found that the "dd_sw" switch is pretty critical when it comes to game-lag. That switch is unchecked on my shortcut.

"DeepColor" is checked.

I kept both display mode options for Fullscreen / Windowed Unchecked.

Although I have a high-resolution screen, I forced the resolution down to a very low 1600 x 900.

These settings are not producing a true "full-screen" experience, but even with an updated map mod (kamikaze I believe) the game looks beautiful, seems very responsive, and map scroll is very smooth.

Hope this helps a bit.

Of course the standard "it depends..." applies here and "your system variables also apply..." and lastly YMMV but here are the three abbreviated shortcuts I use to fire off the game.

Windowed (2560x1440 window resolution):
"...exe" -wd -pxf2550 -pyf1350 -deepColor -dd_sw -altFont -altFontSize -skipVideo -archive

Windowed (1920x1080 window resolution):
"...exe" -wd -pxf1900 -pyf950 -deepColor -dd_sw -altFont -altFontSize -skipVideo -archive

Full screen:
"...exe" -fd -pxf1280 -pyf768 -deepColor -dd_sw -altFont -altFontSize -skipVideo -archive

I have not issues with any slowness or lagginess.

You'll need to play around with your settings until you get it right, there is no magic solution, just some guidelines and a lot of elbow grease and blood on your end...

Always remember to use the "-" on the keyboard and not the minus sign on any numeric keypad.

It is all about the switches, and it takes time to dial them in. But when you do, well, turns in '44 for me take less than 30 secs to complete if I have the delays set to zero, the pop-ups off, and auto-save on. No lag in that ... ;)

Here's the absolute most winning ticket I got. Adjust the resolution for your needs (for version 26B):

"C:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition\Beta2\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -SingleCpuOrders -cpu2 -wd -px1920 -py1080 -deepColor -dd_sw -altFont -skipVideo -archive -cd

I currently use for an Intel CPU:

"C:\WitPAE\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -w -SingleCpuOrders -dd_sw -skipVideo -multiaudio -autosave -altFont -pxf1920 -pyf1060 -deepColor -archive

I should add that I just ran 28 turns of scen 1 in about 15mins ....
