Windows 11 compatibility

Post by nanni »

I made a fresh reinstall of the game with the two updates shown in My Page, therefore including this latest one.
No problem there, but the game - which was already clunky under Windows 10, under Windows 11 (24H2 upgrade) is clunkier still.
There are 2 problems:
1. I tried every trick I knew to get it playing on a full screen, to no avail.
2. Scrolling the map North-South or East-West is now slow as molasses.
Does anyone have a decent switch orders line to put in the properties target slot?
I am now using ......Admiral's Edition" -dd_sw -f -px1920 -py1080 -deepColor.
I tried lowering the resolution to 1366/768, but no dice.
My PC laptop is about 2 years old and has Intel core i7, and a Nvidia GEForce RTX.
We waited about 4 years for this WITP AE update; an extra week to bring it to Windows 21st century (1st quarter) standards would have been time well spent.
Instead of obsessing over the disbanding TFs button, maybe some extra attention should be given to Windows 11 compatibility.
Switches, anyone?

15.1 inch laptop with low specs here..
Game runs in full screen mode in 1366x768 resolution, which is one of the laptop's native, true 16:9 resolutions
No scrolling lag, you can smoothly scroll the game map with all overlays on (road, rail, supply tracing).
No problems with Windows+D or alt-tabbing.

My switches (I have never used the -f switch):

-altFont -skipVideo -archive -deepColor -dd_sw -px1366 -py768

Outside the game my screen is set to 125% icon scale with 1920x1080 resolution (also a native, true 16:9 resolution).

Thanks. That was helpful. The sound is perfect, scrolling is much better. but still no full screen, the screen is narrower than it should be. I got this result by lowering your resolution to 1366/768 and removing the f from px and py.
At least now I can play the game again.
Thank you again.

The -f is not a standalone switch. It is meant to be added to the resolution as in -fpx**** -fpy****. It 'forces' the non-native resolution on your system but only if your system and screen can handle it.

The "-f" is for full screen, if it was "-fd" it would be for full screen with daily saves. My "-wd" is for windowed and daily saves. The windows system sometimes has problems with the full screen mode in handling the game, or something like that.

The "-pxf****" and the "-pyf***+ are to force the resolution. It is not "-fpx****" nor "-fpy***" . . .
Except maybe in Big Canada Land . . . ;)

Use of the -f and pxf/pyf switches together is confusing the game. Your trying to run full screen and in a window.

I have two sets of short cuts one for full screen and one for windowed and both work fine. I do have a 4k HD so I had to make some "adjustments" to get it to work (note that my screen size in windows mode is 2560x1440 and notice the screen size I set below to make it work, YMMV).

Full screen:

-fd -pxf1280 -pyf768 -deepColor -dd_sw -altFont -altFontSize -skipVideo -archive

I am deeply grateful to all of you guys. The game now works ok. I had to borrow a bit from one and a bit from another, because when all is said and done, no two PCs are identical. I also have a desktop running on Windows 11 24H2 with the same graphics card, and when I downloaded and installed this brand new update to WITP/AE, it simply swallowed it up and ran it without breaking sweat.
My conclusion is that MG should have "remastered" WITP/AE to Windows 11 standard, like they do to old movies (but is it even technically feasible?) Right now, the game is essentially a product of the Windows 98SE - ME - 2000 - XP - VISTA generation, 2009 in another words.
Kind greetings from across the seas.

I suppose it is technically possible to update the game engine to match Win11, but that would force all players to adopt Win11. There are many players who, for various reasons, want to keep their previous version of Windows. Sometimes it has to do with other games they have that don't run well on Win11.

I guess. Still, Windows 98SE and immediate successors are 15 years old now. How many people really have kept PCs still running on that stuff? At least remaster the game to Windows 8.1 or 10. Expecting an 11 machine to accept 98SE software is like trying to convert a Roman legion into an armored brigade. About the only thing that might work is latin speakers understanding modern Italian.
