36 is smaller than the lower numbers in some things, sum things? lol
take cables for instance.. doh, was that a sucker?

Different than for cables (but similar in that smaller is bigger). Gauge of a shotgun:

The gauge number of the bore is the number of equal sized (and weighted) balls of lead, their combined weight equaling exactly one pound, and their size such that the diameter of each ball is equal to the bore diameter.

So, take a pound of lead, divide it in 4 equal parts, make 1 lead ball out of each piece. The diameter of each ball is the diameter of the bore of a 4 gauge shotgun.

For a 12 gauge shotgun, divide the pound of lead into 12 equal parts and make one ball of each part. The diameter of each ball is the diameter of the bore.

Hopefully I worded that right, it's a bit convoluted to put wright down.

Tbh here in Germany the pound is also still used after all those years. If one buys flesh for example at the butcher the usage of pounds is pretty common.

Hey, we (U.S. of) Americans are multi-metric! . . . 81mm mortars; 105mm and 155mm Artillery; and 90mm tank / anti-tank and/or anti-aircraft guns, &tc, were all U.S. designs in WW II.
And we, Europeans, use 76,2mm guns, 102mm guns, 152mm guns... and we all pretend those are round numbers :)

Well I guess the difference is:
If one gets shot by a 10,5 cm howitzer one has a clue how big the hole in his body will be.
If one gets shot by a 15 pounder howitzer one has a clue how big the headache will be.
