I would not have wanted to be the captain of the Stalin. If she had performed badly then her officers probably would have been purged.

You do realize tha Carter was an Annapolis grad and served aboard submarines for six years right? Political opinions of President Carter aside (and I agree with about .001% of what he says btw) he was still served and deserves a ship named after him. He could have had a carrier but he thought a submarine was more appropriate.

You do realize tha Carter was an Annapolis grad and served aboard submarines for six years right? Political opinions of President Carter aside (and I agree with about .001% of what he says btw) he was still served and deserves a ship named after him. He could have had a carrier but he thought a submarine was more appropriate.

Shouldn't every president have a ship named after them, regardless or military service. Being president should be a qualifier enough on its own. The president is the commander and chief after all. There just doesn't seem to be a lot of consistency with the what type of ships are named after presidents.

PS. This thread is the reason why you should never discuss politics on a non-political discussion board...we already have 2 instances of people's political opnions showing through (myself being on of them). So apologies for going off topic and typing without thinking.

Nuclear engineer of some sort no? I remember 3 mile Island. Carter showed up and sat at the console and knew what was going on and how all the controls worked. Can one imagine W doing the same thing? No point on politics intended, but it seems our politicians are now politicians from day 1. Never did much else but go to school and enter politics.

CVN-79 will be the second ship of the Gerald Ford class, and isn't to enter service until 2018. It doesn't have a name yet.

He was apparently undergoing training for that position (if you trust Wikipedia) but cut his training short and resigned his commission when his father died. I suspect he knew more about nuclear power plants than the average layman but that isn't really fair to insult GWB because he didn't get the same training.

Carriers should have kept names of famous ships or battles, submarines names of fish, etc. (Ever hear of a fish named the Glenard P. Lipscomb?) Once we opened the pandoras box of naming ships for political expediency, we may as well have just sold the rights to the corporations. "Anchors aweigh on the USS Pampers." And for presidents? Well, maybe after they'd been dead for a while or assassinated, but otherwise, its just politics as usual.

Crap, I hate the idea of them naming carriers after presidents. Does not matter which one, it just blows. What about Wasp or Hornet? Now that sound like an aircraft carrier!
