Nice photos, thanks for sharing.

I can never look at this battle without getting a little choked up or feeling a little awed at the audacity, and sheer bravery, of so many men fighting so bravely in a hopeless battle for which they were not trained, equiped, forwarned,or prepared. Yet they still turned the enemy away, albeit with some questionable decisions on the opposite side.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

What a fascinating series of photos, especially the ones that show American and Japanese ships in the same frame; eerie. Seeing the series that showed the Gambier Bay's plight really brought that situation home, and one feels real desperation for the crew. That was indeed a hairy time for all involved, on both sides. Thanks for posting!

Sobering photos of a sometimes impersonal, brutal business.

What's so amazing is the flight deck operations whilest under shellfire. Then again-what choice did they have? They fought to the last, all of them.

His book is a very good read...it has an online version at the link above. Basically a timeline of events of the battle.

If Iwo Jima ensured a Marine Corps; Battle off Samar will ensure a Navy. Here's the book: http://www.amazon.com/Last-Stand-Tin-Sa ... 0553381482 that covers the entire battle.

There were some timeless one-liners in that battle. Like from unknown AAA NCO on CVE:

"Come on guys, we are sucking them into 40 mm range!" [8D]
"To meaningless French Idealism, Liberty, Fraternity and Equality...we answer with German Realism, Infantry, Cavalry and Artillery" -Prince von Bülov, 1870-
