OT-yehudi lights

Post by Skacee »

Guys, you might know,
but for me this one is new a and solved my old question - how to make a plane less visible from a land.

It is done thanks to an active camo called "yehudi lights" and it worked!
(Wau - US had developed many interesting technologies during WW2)

More about here - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yehudi_lights.

Yes, this would possibly be less visible given certain lighting conditions and angle of vision, but you can still pretty much see it.

Once an observor was trained to look for that light pattern (and we hominids are good at patterns) I think it's done its dash.

Looks like an Asian tiger mosquito.
Swatted one of them back in the mid 90s at a cafe near Columbia University then a few days later read an article in the NY Daily News that this new invasive mosquito was now in NYC. Apparently they were carried over inside tires.

I have killed three in the last 8 days at home - we have an invasion:

Not only they use "yehudi lights" but also adopted "silent running".

I like to tell the young ladies that if a person eats a lot of garlic that it keeps the blood sucking females away. [;)] The young ladies deeply inhale and appear as if they are ready to verbally fight with me but then I inform them that only the female mosquitoes suck blood. They seem to deflate after that. [:D]

Also, mosquitoes have a blood type preference in this order:
O, A, B, AB

They also prefer Rh+ over RH-.

If that's even remotely true I should be on the lower end of the spectrum for being bitten.[8D]

Most of the time it doesn't seem that way.[8|] Then again I live on Long Island, NY, and the mosquito is our regional bird.[:D]

Maybe it is something else for you? [;)]

Yes, your blood type is one of many factors that attracts mosquitoes. Type O has been shown to be more preferable than other blood types.
As long ago as 1972, a study published in Nature magazine by Corinne Shear Wood and others showed that Anopheles gambiae mosquitoes preferred biting people with type O blood.

A more recent study, published in 2004, showed the same results using a different species of mosquito, Aedes albopictus. As long ago as 1972, a study published in Nature magazine by Corinne Shear Wood and others showed that Anopheles gambiae mosquitoes preferred biting people with type O blood.

A more recent study, published in 2004, showed the same results using a different species of mosquito, Aedes albopictus.
.
.
.
Those who were secreters in blood group O averaged 83.3% mosquito landing rates, while those who were secreters in blood group A averaged only 46.5% landing rates.

Mosquitoes may be able to sense the saccharides that people secrete from the skin, based on different blood types, and use that to select their preferred victims.

So if you’re blood type O, are you doomed to be a mosquito magnet? Well, not really.

There are dozens of other things that attract mosquitoes also. Some you can’t control, like exhaling carbon dioxide. Others you can, though. It’s been shown that drinking just one beer will make you more attractive to mosquitoes, according to a 2002 study in the Journal of the American Mosquito Control Association and the results were confirmed in a 2010 study. Mosquitoes also like the odor of Limburger cheese, which turns out to be similar to the odor of smelly feet. If you sweat more, mosquitoes will come to that odor too.

So even if you’re unlucky enough to have blood type O, you may still be less attractive to mosquitoes than others who lure them in different ways.

Why Do Mosquitoes Bite Some People More Than Others?
Blood type, metabolism, exercise, shirt color and even drinking beer can make individuals especially delicious to mosquitoes
You come in from a summer hike covered with itchy red mosquito bites, only to have your friends innocently proclaim that they don’t have any. Or you wake up from a night of camping to find your ankles and wrists aflame with bites, while your tentmates are unscathed.

You’re not alone. An estimated 20 percent of people, it turns out, are especially delicious for mosquitoes, and get bit more often on a consistent basis. And while scientists don’t yet have a cure for the ailment, other than preventing bites with insect repellent (which, we’ve recently discovered, some mosquitoes can become immune to over time), they do have a number of ideas regarding why some of us are more prone to bites than others. Here are some of the factors that could play a role:

A+ here. No grade inflation either.

I'm type A+, I try to have my stepson & grandson around for the skeeters since they are both type O and get all the love from the lady skeeters.

Sweat is a big factor. They also like some of the scented shampoos and soaps, so damned if you do and damned if you don't!
The UV light traps seem to work fairly well, but there will always some bloodsuckers that don't see the light. [:(]

I am O+, the Universal Donor.

I also live in Florida, which is essentially a very large swamp.
The mosquitoes here are difficult to differentiate from the bats.
My oldest cat is named Skeeter.

I don't buy the claim above as I can be sitting next to my little brother while he is getting eaten alive while narry a bug bothers me.

Skeeters, except for my cat, don't seem to take much of a hankerin to me.

Do you eat a lot of garlic? That odor keeps them away. Other things will keep them away as well.
