They would also act like a trail for movement.

They are historical railways that go to places where something is produced. It could be minerals, but the dev choose not to add a base there, or it could be a center for shipping say cattle but since food is not a resource in WiTP:AE, the base was not necessary.
There are mods that added bases at the end of them with a few points of resources, or more than a few, as per whatever the mod creator decided.

By the way are Rauilway lines something new in the game?

Never heard of Rauilway lines in any war game before.

Future sites for Outback restaurants? Mad Max movie shooting locations? I figure if these remote locations ever come under threat of Japanese encroachment it's game over.

Probably a place to load livestock and/or where the line was not yet finished.

There is a similar line on the map that goes north towards where the town of Yellowknife, Canada is located nowadays on the Great Slave Lake. But in 1941 it was just a remote gold mining camp, so probably the same sort of thing. Low level resource extraction and prospecting going on. Waiting for the line to be finished when the war ends and become a boom-town.

End of an era. I'll miss going out and shooting the signs up with buckshot.
