Destoying fortifications

Post by Chris21wen »

Something I should know.

Am I correct in saying, the only way to destroy forts is though any kind of ground attack. All air attacks or naval bombardments do is indirectly slow their repair and construction through unit disruption, delaying repair through damaging AF and ports and lessening supply?

I have destroyed many units called forts (not fortifications) by sustained bombing and naval bombardment. Once you knock out all the devices the unit ceases to exist. Most forts cannot be 'recalled' from the dead units list either. Note - this probably does NOT apply to CD gun batteries. If the unit was moveable then I think it can be recalled from the dead units list providing there are devices in the pools and PP.

Edit to add: and you are correct about fortifications - they can only be destroyed by direct LCU attack that "lowers the forts".

Two different kinds of forts…..Base fortifications and field forts.

You need Combat Engineers to knock down base fortifications.

Fortification 101:

In the field…..the forts are not permanent they go with the unit.
Coastal Defense units (CD units) are field units even in a base hex.

I can’t remember but I think Alfred was wrong.
In the field you don’t need engineers to build forts.

Forts built by units not in bases are "destroyed" or rather abandoned when the unit moves and can NOT be occupied by another unit.

Fortifications in bases can be destroyed in combat during the combat itself or when the base is captured in a battle with enemy forces, not when it flips or is captured when no enemy units are there.

Fortifications 101 is an old one.

I did mean fortifications built at bases. To make sure I got his right, they can only be destroyed or damaged by engineers in combat. Bombing or bombardment has no effect other than to reduce build speed etc.

Fortifications can also be destroyed by armoured forces in combat at any odds and not just combat engineers. The can also be destroyed in normal combat if the odds are high enough, I believe that 1:1 odds are high enough.

What RJ said, and add anti-tank guns and heavy artillery to help reduce forts during combat (not just bombardments). Arty 155mm and up seems to work and the 203 mm+ guns can be devastating. You won't see the forts reduced message, but the devices within will be disabled and destroyed more quickly.

I think they did an injustice to us players with the fort(s) terminology. What I interpret them to mean are forts at bases are permanent structures like pill boxes, dragons teeth, concrete encasements for guns etc. I think of the forts with the units as sandbag defensive positions like the fire bases in Vietnam.

The idea is that the higher the fort level the more permanent the defenses. So level one is fox holes and level 9 is concrete bunkers....GP
