A-24 Banshee

Post by Nezlezar »

May '42 Ironman against Japan AI

I have 43 of these planes in the pool and can't find any use for them. No squadrons use them or upgrade to them. I don't see any reinforcement schedule using them either. A couple squadrons arrived with them and had to withdraw soon after and now they're just sitting in the ether wasting space. How do I use these airframes, or any excess airframes in this situation? Is having PDU 'On' the only option?

In the standard campaign game, there are some army squadrons that show up in the Eastern US that still use them. You don't have to use excess airframes although they can be useful for training when better aircraft are in short supply. As the game goes on and you trade up to better models you inevitably end up a with a digital boneyard full of older aircraft no matter what you do.

I am in July 1942 and I have two A-24 units that are useful. One is in Pearl where it provides me some useful naval attack - they even put a bomb hit on the Yamato when the AI decided to try a surface raid in close. The second A-24 unit is in Luganville where it helps me exert some control over the sealanes in between the Solomons and Suva. They are basically just Dauntlesses who start with poorer pilots but after a few months of training they are probably the best Army planes for naval attack (unless you are skip bombing early which I have a house rule against.)

What squadrons use them? I have a headquarter squadron that uses them but I was looking for one that had a larger size.

Is there something with the Ironman campaign that differs from the standard and that is why I can't seem to find a home for them? I understand having outdated planes as I get new ones and replace...but this is May '42, I fully have a need for those planes lol.

That's like the Wile E. Coyote of airplanes. You spend months training the handful you have in naval attack like their Navy brethren and then one or two CAP traps later they're shredded.

They were very useful in Port Moresby in my games, but unfortunately....didn't last long.

In Ironman Beware the Dorniers, they appear early in the PI and are a real challenge to deal with as the IJ. At the time A6M's are few and far between, Oscars are just longer legged Nates, and the pea shooters that Nates have (and you have 100's of those) need a lucky shot to bring down anything. Yeah, the A-24 is an early headache for the IJ.

I use them for ASW, to delicate for anything else early game with bad pilots and not enough ftrs to escort them.

That’s what I do with the Australian Banshees. They will actually attack subs occasionally, too.

I may be wrong but I think it requires attack bombers at 1000 feet or below.

At 1000 feet, Low Naval skill is used. At 100 feet, the Strafing skill is used and the aircraft with use the forward firing guns (maybe others?) but will also drop bombs if they are carried. This presumes that the aircraft is not a torpedo bomber with torpedoes loaded.
Seek peace but keep your gun handy.
