what can you do with them, not well armed or have much of ASW ?

The US Tacoma class patrol frigates are excellent ASW platforms. Even the RAN River class PFs are better ASW platforms than most RN destroyers.

I use the lesser designs as escorts for less important convoys.

The Tacomas also have better endurance than most destroyer escorts.

I don't have the data handy, but I recall seeing that frigates usually had larger depth charge magazines- so they could make more attacks before going for replenishment. On DDs, more of the magazine spaces were filled with AA shells, main gun ammo and torps.
