Game won't respond to mouse clicks

Post by ool »

Just bought a Asus Republic of gamers desktop.

Game installs and works till it is my turn. Mouse pointer moves fine but game won't respond to mouse clicks. Can't move around the map or click on units etc.

Also I bought WITP-AE before it was stand alone. I downloaded it from the members downloads. Is that a standalone download of the game or is WITP required as well?

The game is standalone, but there is an official patch and unofficial Beta to bring it up to date and fix various issues. But those should not manifest as the sorts of problems you are reporting. You might have to find the setting for "Emulation mode" - can't recall if it emulates Win XP or Win 7.

Can you post screenshots of your game settings (the radio dials at startup)? If you have the switch set to PBEM mode you would have to have another player handle one or the sides in the game.
Did you create a game startup shortcut icon that points directly to the game executable (NOT the automatically created shortcut that points to Autorun.exe)? If you did set up that icon, did you set up switches in the properties area to control game resolution, which cpu processes the game, etc?

Changing the target to launch the game has fixed it.

Thanks

Sounds like you have the same computer I have and I'm having the mouse problem as well. What did you change your target to?

Actually I was premature in my assessment that the problem was fixed.

I changed the target for the shortcut to the admiral.exe file and went from no response to the mouse to some movement. I didn't check further as I was preparing for cancer surgery.

I have tried windows emulation of win95,win98,win7 & win8. All with the same result. The mouse response has a 3-5 second lag time to respond. Moving around the map is like walking in mud. Extremely slow and frustrating.

Tried lowering the resolution to 640X480 window. Same result.

If you find a solution would you please let me know. I really would like to get back into this game but with the mouse so useless its too frustrating to contemplate playing it in this situation.

While this doesn't help you much at least you now know what hasn't worked for me. Maybe if you try some of what I've tried it might work for you.

Good luck.

Sorry to hear of your cancer surgery. Hang in there, I had to have cancer surgery too and it was successful. Wishing you the best of luck!

As for the slow mouse - you have not set up your switches which allow modern computers and OSs to handle the very old game engine better.
You do this in the shortcut icon properties (right click on the shortcut that points directly to the game executable file).
There are several threads and a sticky thread on the subject of switches and what they do, but I will just give you my switch string and show you where they go in the shortcut properties:

"C:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -altFont -archive -deepColor -px1680 -py1050 -w -fixedArt -skipVideo -multiaudio -SingleCpuOrders -cpu3

Thanks for the info. Also for your encouraging words in regards to my cancer surgery.

I did finally fix it by adding -w to my target string rather than -f.

I wish you best of luck in both getting this great game running ans also in kicking cancer right in the ass!

"C:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -altFont -archive -deepColor -px1680 -py1050 -w -fixedArt -skipVideo -multiaudio -SingleCpuOrders -cpu3

I get a error message," engine requires 16,24 or 32 bit mode". I installed the game on drive D. Changed the path start drive accordingly to what you provided.

You must leave your shortcut pointing at where the file is on YOUR system. My string is just an example of how mine is set up. And I am not using the 1126b version which uses a Beta2 install folder. I don't use it so I can't accurately say what the path should be .

The best thing is to use Explorer to navigate to where the game is on your D: drive and make a new shortcut of the game file War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe (Just right click on the file name, choose Create Shortcut, and then copy or drag the shortcut to your desktop. At that point the shortcut will have the correct path to get to the game file. Then just put in the switches you want after the end of the quote (") marks.

Be aware that my switch choices are what works on my system and you may have to try different things for your particular computer, video card, monitor and OS setup. There are some lengthy threads in this Tech forum that deal with people's switch issues and what combinations they tried that worked. Please read them to get a feel for what to try. My only advice is to only change one thing at a time before testing it out.

Funny world. Mine crashed with -w. When I try -f the mouse moves but is still delayed but not as bad as before. Hard to get these old games to work on the new systems.

win 10 "B:\WAR-GAME\WITPAE\Beta2\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -SingleCpuOrders -altFont -deepColor -skipVideo -dd_sw -w -pxf1900 -pyf1000
the game works stably, also try to launch as an administrator.

Appreciate the feedback. " -f -deepcolor" solved the issue. Moves like a cigar boat on calm water. [8D]
