Latest Patch - Windows Crash

Post by Magpius »

Downloaded newest patch and 3 times in a row, now crashes windows and restarts my computer.
Anyone else?
Is there a way to recover a crash log?

Crashes when? During the patch installation or during a game after the patch installation?

As soon as I click the shortcut, usual asks if I want to run the .exe file, then boom. Windows 11 blue screen of death with the ascii smily face, telling me windows has crashed and the computer restarts.
The game was running fine up until this latest patch. Patch installed without a problem.
Also tried running game from launcher.exe in folder, no luck.
But game for me is now currently dead.
Running windows 11 on a Thinkpad Carbon X1 with 32GB ram etc...

I am guessing that the .exe you are trying to run is the file downloaded from the Matrix site?
The .exe file you download is typically a compressed file which needs to be run directly (not from a shortcut) to unpack all the game files and finish the install. It updates the Windows registry which is necessary for the computer to connect to the game. Once you have that unpacked, I presume the new game will make a shortcut and put it on the desktop and you will then need to add switches to make it run well.

If this is not the issue, can you give us a screenshot of the shortcut properties or at least spell out the full name of the .exe. file?

I've uninstalled.
Cleaned out any reference to "War in the Pacific Admirals Edition" from the system registry, and will try a clean install and patch later today.
Fingers crossed.

Good news, installed.
2. Observations. The patch deleted the desktop shortcut, previously it didn't, maybe the old one triggered a conflict.
Was also running A chemkid map mod, could this create a conflict with new map? Unlikely to kill windows.
I am noticing some graphic shear on the map when I toggle off combat animations. When on I don't get explosion or gunfire just the planes or ships sitting opposite each other, but maybe that's a switch value I can change.
Anyways working.

If you had the old shortcut which the original game put on your desktop, it likely pointed to the Autorun.exe. That program just opened a small menu screen with options for starting up the game, the manual, the editor or looking for updates on the Matrix site. Switches did nothing in that shortcut. Users had to create a shortcut to the game .exe file manually and move it to their desktop. So now the new patch takes care of that - great!

Lack of firing and explosions will happen if you put the -noFire switch in your shortcut properties.

The momentary graphic shear is the video software catching up with drawing the map sections when you move. In your preferences you could try setting the scroll speed delay to 1 to make it scroll faster. (IIRC the number you input is the divisor, so a lower number equals a faster scrolling speed).
The new .1128 version has a revised map and additional bases including some ports. The beautiful map you like is just eye candy for you and is defined in something like 28 art files. The computer does not use these at all, it depends on PWHEX and two other files that contain the details of every map location, terrain and navigable hex sides. You need to have the art match the data or you will get bases at locations different from the picture you see. The guys who created those beautiful maps sometimes have the software and skills to modify the map data files to match. That will take a while if the game creators allow it at all (copywrite issues).
