Thanks for the answer. I kinda thought it might mean Assault Value but wasn't sure. Thanks for confirming.

QoL Enhancement for Allies Kull Spreadsheet: Base Forces

Post by Moltrey »

Hey everyone:
I am posting a pic showing a small modification I made to my copy of Kull's Allies Spreadsheet regarding US Base Forces. I isn't hard to do on your own file.
Here is a pic of the Base Force example:
Image

So, I have found during my time learning WITP:AE that it can be confusing when you are trying to match the Base Force and Detachment units to game bases you intend on creating and/or expanding.
In order to more quickly see which units in the spreadsheet have the all-important Naval Support (Stevedores for loading/unloading, etc.) along with Air Support, I have gone through on column O and using the same tint of light green as the "Nav" on line 3 to designate the units in question in the US sections of the whole spreadsheet.

Why do this? Well, from experience, mobile Naval Support units are limited and vary in support type and amount, so one needs to plan which units to allocate on which missions. For instance, I tend to flip the original destinations as you can see in the pic under "comments" so that the 108th USN Base Force is tasked with going from Nome to Cold Bay and is one that doesn't have any Naval Support but it does have 6 Air Support. All I want it to do is support air squadrons at Cold Bay and (for my purposes) isn't going to be expanded into a major base.
Adak, on the other hand, is a forward future base that absolutely needs immediate Naval (and Air) Support to help with loading and unloading of supplies, men and equipment to establish a beachhead before the Japanese get wind of the operation and decide to spoil the show. The 106th USN Base Force with 50 Naval and 6 Air Support is just the unit I am looking for to do the job. Lack of Naval Support really slows down transfers and efficient use of transport ships. The faster you can turn around those transports, the faster the fledgling base will become strong enough to resist a strike.

As mentioned, it shouldn't take long to make the highlights in the appropriate Nav cells so you can tell at a glance when planning.
Hope this is helpful.

I'm an old (in all senses of the word :) ) WitP original version player who has finally decided it's time to give AE a proper go. This spreadsheet IS AMAZING. Absolute gold for someone like me who's overwhelmed with the number of units to deal with. Even coming from the original game, which was not small, it's a LOT to deal with. Having this spreadsheet not only gets you going on the right foot it's an incredible learning tool. Thank you!!

Kull <S> Sir !
What a fantastic set of documents you have created here my friend. 8-)

After many years of looking at this I finally picked it up with the new sale price. I am currently going over Tutorial videos, your documents, the Manual and checking out the Forums. I found your spreadsheets from one of the Tutorial video's by Strategy Gaming Dojo and have been going over it.

Thank you for all your hard and very detailed work!

Thank you Kull for this amazingly helpful tool for this game!

I know it was asked a few years before but it sounded like the answer at the time was "no", so I thought I would ask again:

Is there any place to download a saved game or scenario where all the initial items are set per the checklist?

I am willing to accept the events of turn 1 (ie, did the Repulse sink, Y or N)

I have gone through a portion of this checklist now and have learned quite a bit. However, in the interest of time, it would be nice to have the option to start the game with the entire checklist completed.

Thanks

s96825:

To my knowledge no such setup savegame exists; perhaps someone else knows more?
Unfortunately Kull has been under the radar for almost a year on this board. He's fine, but I suppose has bigger fish to fry. So I don't see any changes likely.

It might be small solace, but I have found that going through the spreadsheet helps me learn my units and I end up making my own version with changes to Kull's original (for reasons like I pointed out in my post above here).
Typically it takes me a couple weeks or more to complete it if I am not on vacation!
Good luck.

Part of the problem is that the Allied turn is done after the Japanese one, so any saved turn 1 would include whatever Japanese situation there was. That would negate the variability in the 13 versions of Scenario 1 (original game, not the one-off "update" that was done before the current revamp started). And if you are playing PBEM against an opponent I am not sure you can save both players' turn 1.

Once you select the game scenario and start to play, the AI plans are set. A player can not save the setup and expect a different AI plan so it will play out the same way. Which is not necessarily a problem for learning but if you expect different AI targets, you will be disappointed.

I have owned this game for years, but only installed it a month ago. I am learning the game from your spreadsheet, Kull.

Many thanks, it is an excellent teaching tool.

I'm old also, 75 to be exact. And like you, I played the original on what would be considered an ancient computer today. I am really excited about this spreadsheet Kull has made. I couldn't agree with you more on this spreadsheet.

Kull makes reference to "KB" a number of times in the comments section of her spreadsheet. Like move after KB leaves. Who or what is KB?

KB is the Kido Butai or Mobile Force. It was the Japanese term used to designate the carrier fleet comprising most of the aircraft carriers and carrier air groups of the Imperial Japanese Navy during the first eight months of the Pacific War. So, basically Kull is referring to the carrier fleet that is poised to strike Pearl Harbor. For many Allied ship movements he advises you want to wait until the KB departs Hawaiian waters when it's safer to move without fear of air attack. In addition, the Japanese light carriers Ryujo, Zuiho and Hosho are often referred to as the mini-KB when in a group.

Hello,

I am working my way through the spreadsheet and I got stuck at AM Cairns (I can't find an update/fix for this). Basically it tells me to create a soldiers transport and a tanker using MineSweepers. Can anyone confirm what the correct move here is?

Thanks

Operator error? Not to be rude but those AMs are the escorts, if you look further down the list you will see the other ships included in the task force such as the TK British Motorist.

I see what I missed now, thanks - makes sense If I will look at the whole task force, not just the individual ship. I forgot to apply a filter to the comment section :)

Thank you!
