Ports Questions

Post by majpalmer »

LaRochelle: Shouldn't it be a 5? The Germans had U-Boat Pens there. I assume they could repair damaged U-Boats. Same for Trondheim and Bergen where they also had Pens.

There are two ports along the northern French coast that have no rail connections. Calais and Rouen? Shouldn't all ports have rail connections?

I have fixed these in the Editor. But is there some design reason I'm missing?

Yes, why do Calais and Le Havre have no rail connection? Same for Dover. Is it because otherwise Dover and Calais will inadvertently be connected by rail? If so, there is still Le Havre that has no connection.

What is the rationale behind this?

Has to do with the current game mechanic that has some flaws. If the rail is connected it creates problems.

When I made WP1 I had not coded in 20 years.

WP2 takes care of this. I can't do it in WP1 though. At least I haven't found a way. I am trying not to mess with the base code too much. As is it seems I messed up ZoC by fixing something else.

For Dover - Calais I figured as much.

But what about Le Havre, why is that port not connected to a rail?

ZoC issue was the 1942-1944 scenario that no one noticed FYI

The LeHarve and Dover issue has to do with connections. If they have rail the Germans can direct rail into England. Back then I couldn't find a solution to this problem. But now I have and I am hoping to correct it in one of the patches.

The big concern was CPU speed resolving path finding. But I found an efficient way to do this specific check easier with WP2. I have to finish designing the A.I. to see the full impact of the change over many units.

As a human you can't see the difference because it is one unit at a time. The A.I. uses hundreds if not thousands of path finding routines in a turn.

Okay, the channel tunnel at Dover - Calais would be an anachronism, hehehe. The Le Havre teleportation device I don't get, but if you say so
