Newbie Upgrade cost

Post by tonyscrase »

Enjoying the game but some questions

a) I think reinforcement and upgrade are taken out of the same production pool. The reinforcement costs are shown in the rules but I can't see any information about upgrade costs
b) Am I right in thinking you have to achieve an advancement then for a unit to benefit from that advancement you have to spend production points on an upgrade
c) can a unit accumulate upgrade points before the advancement is achieved so it can benefit from the advancement as soon as it is achieved

Hi Tony,

Welcome to the game.

1) Yes, you have to assign part of the production to reinforce and upgrade. The assigned amount, and no more, will be used for that among you units in this order of priority :
  • Naval on priority
    Land on priority
    Air on priority
    Naval
    Land
    Air
Upgrade cost are 10% of the 1939 cost of the unit. So for exemple, 12 PP for a submarine (which cost 120 PP for 39 tech) for each tech level beyond 39.

2) Yes

3) Not sure I understand the " upgrade points " idea. A unit will upgrade one level if there are enough PPs assigned for advancement/reinforcement in the build window (and the particular unit is allowed to get them by its setting). A unit can upgrade one level per turn max. It can also reinforce for 20% of max strength per turn.

Hope it helps,

#3 no they can't.

Reinforcements and upgrades in reality are basically the same thing. But it is very difficult to represent that in a wargame.

In 1942....
A unit has 30 MG-34s stationary machine guns.
10 are damaged to the point they can't be repaired.
They get as reinforcements and replacements 7 MG-42s.

The 7 MG-42 = 10 MG-34 guns. But you can't really do this in this kind of wargame as it doesn't have that level of detail.

So think of reinforcements and upgrades as part of the same process. But they are separate which allows you to say hey I don't want to upgrade this 1939 unit but I do want to send it replacements.... it is just a garrison until I need it NOT to be. So in 1940 you can place all these 1939 divisions on the coast as garrisons and build up a fully teched out force for Barbarossa. Yet fill them up to 10 strength.

It gives you lots of options without burdening you with complexity. But..... I do like your idea. I might incorporate it into WP2 where you still can do both but the tech level of a float where units can be tech level 1.3 representing having 1/3rd of their equipment replaced by the newer technology while also allowing a smoother lower cost transition to new technology so many units get small increments instead of a few getting some.

I can also make it part of reinforcements where prioritizing a unit for tech means it gets double 2x/3x tech increases while receiving reinforcements.

Hope that makes sense.

Could you please consider a certain amount of experience lost due to upgrade? New equipment need some training. A T34/85 was not the same than a T34/76 with its new design as an example. Same for planes, subs, ships, …

I really like this idea. Without going into exact tank or plane models, there are lots of example in ww2 where a corps were having few new tanks, coming from factory, but plenty of old ones too.

Same thing in air units for some countries on low pace with production.

It does. It mixes the country default experience with unit's experience.

I believe HOI 3 has a percentage upgrade system. So when a new technologic progress have been achieved, like a new tank model, it will show a percentage value on how much of the unit stock have been upgraded with the new model. Like 30% would tell that this is the amount of the new models in the unit. The remaining 70% would be the old models.

By the way, just got this excellent game last week. Maybe only competing with WIF on my WWII strategy playlist.
Looking forward to the next version whenever it is ready.
