Landing in Normandy

Post by canuckgamer »

We have finished three 1939 Small Fleet Campaigns and because the Russians are so weak the Allies have invaded western Europe in 1943 in all the games. They have invaded Brittany, Normandy and around Antwerp. Normandy was impossible to hold. For example the Allies had a full strength armour unit in hex 134,52 with naval and air support. It can only be attacked from two hexes. Two full strength German panzer corps attacking always produced a result of a shatter to the Allied armour unit.
Seems the only one of the three areas that the Allies can hold is Brittany. That said if the Germans defend Brittany with decent German units the Allies can only advance by way of attrition.
Am I missing a tactic or strategy where a Normandy invasion can actually stay ashore?

This is a vast subject, but short answer is you need bigger ports, more invaders, more paratroopers. Complete air dominance.

Also, in 1943 keeping two panzer corps busy for a friendly shatter is not the worst trade. But don't defend with armor.

Air strike their possible counter strike units, have defensive air support available, and use naval units to provide support as well as resupply

No one has done this yet... but...

you could use less units and a massive airforce like they did in real life. You would be ground striking German units into oblivion to where their effectiveness is low thus preventing counter attacks.

I am trying to do ground strikes like this to reduce effectiveness but I don't know which units I am facing. This is hard to launch an invasion to the unknown. I like my pixel troopers.

May I suggest that doing a ground strike on one unit is increasing the reconnaissance level on top of that unit? This way, you could simulate something like aerial reconnaissance.

In that same topic, I would suggest that small corps should show up as large units instead of small units as they do now. Would be way more useful (and I believe logical).

I would rather recon be a bit more varied.

All recon is 100% perfect which for me incorrect.
Should be a chance for inaccurate recon.

It happened all the time.

Agree but the air recon of the Allies at the end of the war was quite good. Also, it did not detect the Ardennes offensive.
For Normandy, we don't even know what is in front of us. It is a dice roll.

Operation Fortitude is also not possible.
