The added on short campaigns
I have been trying a few of the short campaigns- Husky, Ardennes and the stand alone Russia 1941. Definitely value added and a flavor different from the basic all of Europe Warplan.
An interesting (to me at least) would be a France 1940 using the already designed Ardennes map with maybe 3 day turns and mostly division units. Also, using the same map and turn times the Normandy invasion thru the end of September 1944.

Just curious if you or if anyone else has tried the Citadel scenario? And if so did you find it balanced against the AI?
But I am with you.....pretty interesting. I did play the North Africa one as Axis and it seemed too easy for Axis. But I dont know maybe I set the difficulty to easy.

Re: The added on short campaigns
Different players, different skill sets. One player on Steam posted he almost gave up on WPE because he couldn't beat the A.I. in France. Another said "yawn, this A.I. sucks". I can beat SC3 Europe A.I. in France 1940. I can stuff them. Doesn't mean the game is bad. It's a great game. I have been playing wargames since I was 15.
Love SC3. It's the game that got me into game design.

Re: The added on short campaigns
I did try the North Africa campaign ( several months ago) with each side, but havent finished either one. As the Axis I have a German Armor and two INfantry sitting just south of Alexandria and Port Said, and several Italian around El Alamein-ish, with reinforcements from both nations coming. It is several months earlier as British but have several units in and around Tobruk. Patiently building up. Now TBH I started them long enough ago that I dont remember if I tried those on easy or not. I am just getting back in the game, and for a game that looks beer and pretzels, it definitely is NOT.
As an aside, I played the first couple turns of Husky as Axis and it looks very interesting but dont know how its balanced. I have somewhat of a defensive line back from the invasion hexes, but not sure how long they can hold out.
Also, Played one turn as Axis in the Citadelle campaign and I pushed too hard but closed the Kursk bulge killing a lot of Russians and entrapping even more there. Then in Russia's turn, she hit me in the mouth lol and eliminated some of my units because I pushed my own units too hard lowering their strength, and more importantly, their effectiveness.
In the campaign, it is mid June 1940 and low countries are defeated, I am two hexes from Paris with lots and lots of infantry and three Pzr XXX in the thick of it.
I would like to see WP2 show a more historical outcome there. It took Germany 6 weeks, and it is taking me over four months to conquer low countries and France (granted I invaded Oct, 1939 and the weather had a LOT to do with it), but still 6 weeks seems impossible. 3 months would be a quick kill for me (I am not the brightest tactician). I think some sort of surprise attack bonus would help a lot. If I remember correctly, 3rd Reich and ETO and World in Flames had some sort of mechanic. Maybe double or even triple combat power that first turn before returning to normal. Maybe some sort of paralysis for the invaded nation.
No matter what I am still immensely enjoying the game (and still learning nuance) and seriously considering offering up PvP in one of the smaller scenarios....possibly Citadelle.

Re: The added on short campaigns
PvP is WAY better overall...
Much more challenging.

WP is already quite historical. Did you have a look at this thread?jimkehn wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2024 3:55 pm In the campaign, it is mid June 1940 and low countries are defeated, I am two hexes from Paris with lots and lots of infantry and three Pzr XXX in the thick of it.

Re: The added on short campaigns
I just looked at Gelb and it looks good. I did have three armor but no mech. I think with one additional armor and two mech, I could have done much better also, assuming the French would have lined up like they did for you. Which they didnt lol. I like how you thought to get creative in order have the PP to build the 4 fast units. My problem is for this game, my first run through, is there are some events or something that I dont know about that will happen in the future. for example, I wanted to wolfpacks of three subs each. I had 4 subs at one point and wanted to purchase the other two but I got an error saying I needed more shipyards. Well to build 2 subs I needed 20 shipyards. No small amount, that (coulda built another armor corps), so I built my 20 shipyards. A couple (maybe more) turns later I just happened to notice that I had 44 shipyards show up in my production screen. There were none in my que, no ships were sunk, they just were there. More than I really needed. Had I known they were coming, I wouldnt have built the ones I did. Maybe they came from Copenhagen and other ports from the minors as I captured them?
Re: The added on short campaigns
Germany should not be building ship yards....they get can all the subs they want over time. Once the Bismarck arrives they get more shipyards...so can build 3 subs per turn if they want...and they should not want at that time.
The only way to beat France is to have 4 to 5 armor attacking...with maybe a few mech. If you don't have that it will take you all of 40 because your infantry is too slow.
The problem is...IF France falls is 6 weeks in this game...a German play will roll through Yugoslavia and Greece before 41...and that can cause issues..or even take out the Vichy and Spain...
The issue with Historical is you have hindsight... Germany was spent after France but in this game they are still insanely powerful...so can continue on...
Perhaps they need to have a huge oil disadvantage and get an influx to cripple their armor late in 40 IF you want to take France in 6 weeks.
ADD to that...the French player KNOWS where you are going so they defend there which would surely have changed the timing in WWII...

Re: The added on short campaigns
So France finally capitulated and I inherited the whole of France. Vichy, North Africa, Levant, lock stock and barrel. Poor me lol.
Re: The added on short campaigns
Vichy France should normally be established the next turn (and Axis unit in it relocated to a near hex).
Re: The added on short campaigns
Well Vichy wasnt created and I didnt have to kill all of the French, They just surrendered ALL their lands. I think I missed accepting the Vichy agreement on the very next turn but the following turn I accepted France's surrender and got the whole enchilada.
Re: The added on short campaigns
Had you invaded French Africa?
They move their capital there and never surrender...

Re: The added on short campaigns
OK...the turn AFTER their complete surrender Vichy WAS formed and my units that were in Vichy territory were removed to German soil, so I guess I jumped the gun with my conclusion!
