Looking for strong Axis player to play Harsh Winter
Re: Looking for strong Axis player to play Harsh Winter
Early June 1944
Russia
Germans are in full retreat on all three fronts. Russian units are only able to close on them and make a limited few attacks decimating a few Germany infantry units as they retreat.
North - Russian units have reached the Polish border and liberated Riga.
Center - Kiev is evacuated and Russian units pour through giving chase to retreating Germans.
South - Odessa falls to Russian forces as they destroy a Rumanian division that was attempting to delay their advance.
US / UK
Germany - Still at a standstill...Germany mechanized and armored units continue to hold steadfast. US and UK units are waiting for the other fronts to make a big push and then join in the fray.
France - German units move back to dig in. US forces are on the outskirts of Lille...Paris and Vichy fall to UK forces.
Italy - US forces are Taranto expand their foothold. UK forces capture Palermo and nearly all of Sicily. The Allies have received word that Mussolini has fled Italy as the Allies are advancing and those in charge are asking to meet.
- Axis losses were triple Allied this turn...will have to check the forces next. Not sure where they stand. Odd that is like a switch flipped this year...Russian attacks of 2 to 1 now win 90% of the time, where as in 1943 they lost 90% of the time. Not sure why but we shall see if this continues. It is not that their forces are that much stronger.
Oddly the Russian scientists have gone crazy. They are WAY past the US and UK...Russia has had 45 armor for all of 1944, and just got 45 Assault. US has nothing 45...UK has 45 Interceptors...
Looking at the VPs...the Axis is still around 400 behind...not sure how many more they have now, though they did capture 4 or 5 more this turn...with Italy hopefully surrendering next turn that will help...and then Allied forces can begin their march North. The Germans do not seems to have enough forces at the moment in Italy so I suspect they will be railing in a few units this turn.
We shall see.

Mid June 1944
Russia
North - Russians continue to move toward the German lines that continue to move back...no attack occur as units set up for attacks that will begin the end of June.
Center - Russian forces overrun a German corp and division and create a small breakthrough...it is unlikely to hold but they continue to push.
South - 3 breakthroughs in the south and Russian units are now on the Rumanian border...and are few units in the area.
US / UK
Germany - UK units go on the offensive and hammer a German mechanized though receive heavy casualties. A German corps to the East is overrun and a US mechanized and the Canadians go through the breach...Germany has less protecting it now. It is looking sparse if there is a larger breakthrough. A fresh UK mechanized arrives ready for battle.
France - Heavy air strikes and attacks cripple a German armor. Southern France is evacuated and UK special forces land in Marseilles. UK forces overrun a German division and nearly surround an armor and infantry corps. They breakthrough pushing towards Metz. Lille has a dug in highly experienced German panzer corp...US and UK forces ready for a massive assault on Lille.
Italy - Italy surrenders to the Allies. They begin running up the coast overrunning 2 German divisions on their way.
- The German army is shrinking fast...IF I remember...their forces are now 1700...Russia is 2800 so they out gun them heavily. Though that will likely change with some Russian losses coming. But the German Allies are now in trouble as Russian armor begins to pour past their front lines. Not sure if the breakthrough in Germany will hold. There are not enough forces there to hold I believe...I think the Germans will have to call some more units from Russia...which is what they can not afford. A few moved to Italy...but now with the Rumanian oil fields under threat...not sure which direction they will go.

Late June 44
Russia
North - Russian units make multiple attacks against German infantry and armor and make little progress and take heavy casualties.
Center - Germans counter attack a small Russian breakthrough and the Russian forces pay dearly...an army is shredded and a mechanized unit is overrun.
South - German forces continue and organized retreat...Russian forces make better progress here pushing through into Romanian territory and crippling a German corps.
US / UK
Germany - Germans counter attack here and decimate the Canadians and cut off a US mechanized corps...With news of UK defeats in France, the UK forces here spring into action and overrun the German 3rd SS corps, maul a German paratrooper corps and overrun another full German corps. German forces here and thinning out...more UK forces roll in to backup and continue to push forward.
France - UK forces over extend and pay dearly...one corps is hammered and two are overrun by multiple German armor corps. US and UK forces strike back smashing multiple corps.
Italy - With the Italian surrender German forces are extremely sparse and they fall back to the Venice area. US and UK forces land in the North while other unit burn fuel driving up the coast. Free French forces land in Greece...And multiple US forces land north of there ready to strike into Yugoslavia.

Early / Mid July 44
Russia
North - Russian forces smash 3 infantry corps and an armored corps...wearing down the German forces more...and make a little progress west.
Center - Russian forces shift more to the North to assist where the lines are weaker. Multiple armored corps stand in the way of Central force.
South - Huge breakthroughs in multiple places...nearly surrounding a half dozen German corps...it is likely they will fall back but may strike at the Russian armies closest first. Biggest gain was a complete breakthrough in Romania and Russian tanks drove into Ploesti and Bucharest and with that...the Romanians surrendered opening an huge hole in the southern Russian lines.
US / UK
Germany - UK and US forces launch a heavy attack on a German mechanized unit on the southern tip of the line and drive it back...But receive word they Germans have railed in a large group of reinforcements so there is no advance.
France - UK forces smash into a German armor and with a US armor and drive it back after significant casualties...they also cripple a mechanized corps. Loses are about even.
Italy - US and UK forces capture Venice and push north with a huge force. Few if any German units stand in their way. It is likely more defenses will need to be railed in.
Greece - Germans have evacuated as more US and UK forces land in the area. US special forces paradrop into Sophia where no Bulgarian forces are and capture the capital, forcing them the capitulate. 2 German corps likely surrounded and 1 division are all that stand between the force and Yugoslavia and then...southern Germany.

Late July 44
Russia
North - Russian forces overrun a German infantry corps...and close in tight with a few armored and mechanized corps...they are still formidable but their numbers have plummeted.
Center - Russians again overextend and an army pays the price and with is...causes the Siberian armor to pay the ultimate cost as it is surrounded and surrenders. Russian forces rip into the Germans in the area overrunning multiple corps and surrounding two. It is not likely that the units will be pinned but it will cost to extract them. A lone German armor is there to help...but at what cost?
South - Russian forces pour into and through Romania. Another strong German corps is surrounded and likely will not escape...
US / UK
Germany - UK and US units hammer on all fronts...overrunning one of the few mobile German units in the area leaving one mechanized and a dozen German corps to hold the area. The lines are thinning...
France - US and UK forces smash into German armored units taking out hundreds of tanks. The units are crippled and there are few units left in strong fighting condition in France now. A couple of infantry are left.
Italy / Yugoslavia - US and UK forces overrun the last German defenders in Italy and armor drives into Yugoslavia. At this moment there are no German units between the US armor and Berlin...that will surely change but there are few units to move into position. In northern Greece / Southern Bulgaria two strong German corps are cut off and will likely be spending the rest of the war in a prison camp...though there is a small chance they may escape US forces...but unlikely. There choice will be between a US prison or Siberia.

Re: Looking for strong Axis player to play Harsh Winter
I am so screwed as Germany right now, lol. I'm outnumbered 2 or 3 to 1 on 4 fronts now, with the south wide open.
I probably should pull back to Germany while I still have some strength left, but I'm having way too much fun destroying Soviet armor and mech units, so I'm not acting in a purely rational way.
The 4 turns of clear weather prior to summer really killed me here. Things would have been a lot different if we were hitting bad weather right about now instead of having several more clear turns.

Early August 44
Russia
North Russian forces again have to move forward toward German units retreating in a calm manner. They are able to inflict some losses. But Konigsberg has fallen and forces are nearly the main German border.
Center - Forces here have better luck able to overrun multiple units and nearly surround the weakened panzer corps in the area. Russian forces are beginning to enter Poland...and plan to liberate it before winter but that seems like a daunting task at the moment.
South - Russian forces burn fuel where few units exist and pour through Romania and move into Hungary, driving past US airborne forces. They cut off multiple German units and nearly cut off the entire Hungarian army. It is expected that they will be able to escape though not sure as to the cost to do so.
The German lines in Russia are getting thinner and thinner...It is unclear as to when they will completely collapse...but that time is nearing.
US / UK
Germany - US / UK forces overrun a worn mechanized corps as well as break through on the northwestern coast forcing a German infantry to surrender. UK airborne forces drop on the city of Essen and capture it, though quickly move north to meet up with their advancing forces so that they are not caught behind lines for too long. Units receive word that the Seigfreid line is mainly unguarded and push hard to break through.
France - German forces lose multiple units here including an armor and mechanized corps...the III SS corps is nearly overrun and has been crippled. US armor break through the thin German lines and reach the boarder of Germany...it is not sure if they can hold the position but with massive bombings German forces in the area will find it difficult to operate effectively.
Italy - Is now fully under control of the Allies and they have liberated Yugoslavia. Units are now on the southern border of Germany at a mountainous line...if this line collapses there will be nothing stopping the Allies from walking through the underbelly of Germany.
- German and Russian losses were massive this turn...I believe Germany lost almost 400 steps...and if I remember 8 corps...with 3 completely surrounded and multiple others nearing being surrounded...
It is crazy how many forces there are and holes Germany must plug...it is just not possible with the existing forces.

Center - Russian forces have liberated Warsaw and are nearing the German border
South - Russian forces have completely captured Romania and are within sight of Budapest.
US / UK
Germany - US / UK forces break through the river line and meet up with the Allies coming from France. They are able solidify the capture of Essen and artillery is raining on Hanover. Units are 80 miles from Berlin.
France - US / UK forces pour across the Rhine capturing Cologne and cutting off Dusseldorf. Teh also liberate the whole of the Netherlands Belgium and Luxemburg. Units have reached the West wall...which is lightly defended...and one section has already been breached.
Italy - Allied forces have liberated all of Yugoslovia and are moving north...they are nearing Munich and Vienna.
- German forces now number 1100...Russians 2500...UK 1100 and US around 500.
German forces are heavily outnumbers and there are at least 6 to 8 corps that are surrounded...so that number is likely less than 1000 now.
I believe they will be able to survive the winter but you never know.

Early September 44
Russia
North - Russians break through and with a combined attack with the Allies on Stettin they are to smash all defenses in the area and capture a port deep in German territory. Units are within 80 miles of Berlin and will likely be launching assualts before winter
Center - Russian units push through the lines just north of Krakow in an attempt to create multiple pockets of retreating German troops. It is unlikely to pin them but there is a good change some will not escape.
South - Russian troops nearly encircle Budapest, but there is very strong dug in German forces there. Though once surrounded it is unsure how they can hold.
US / UK
Germany - UK and US units assist in the destruction of forces around Stettin. They also hammer a German mechanized corps...one of the few remaining. They are now within 40 miles of Berlin.
France - US / UK units have considerable luck here overrunning a few understrength German panzer corps and a few infantry corps. They have pushed deeper into France and now control the Cologne area as well as Frankfort.
They are cut off multiple German corps in the area and there are few reserves to break them free....cost will be high to break them out and they are likely still not to escape if they do.
Italy - Now in complete Allies controls as is Yugoslavia. US / UK forces are having a difficult time breaching the southern mountains to break into Germany...If they do...it will spell the end very quickly.

Russia
North - Russian units pour up to the German lines...which are extremely thin...they push across and get multiple armored units just south of Berlin.
Center - Russian units again have to move up to the slowly retreating Germans and can only make limited attacks.
South - Russian units here have the same issue...though are able to completely surround Budapest.
US / UK
Germany - A dozen corps strike all around Berlin and with over 4000 aircraft pound Berlin...but are unable to defeat the panzer there...But it is likely to be no longer viable in combat.
France - US / UK units smash eastward cutting off a half dozen German corps and destroying a few more. They are having easier progress due to most German units still on the Eastern Front.
Southern Germany - US / UK units slowly move north...
- It is unlikely the Germans will survive the winter with many units left. IF October has a clear turn they will lose Berlin and most of their industry.
The biggest force of Germans is to the East which slows the Russians heavily but since the UK now have a larger standing army than the Germans...they are doing the most damage as they do not have to keep moving forward, the Germans are not able to retreat anymore...just try to hold.

Early October 44
RAIN all over...
Russia
North - Units continue to push deeper into Germany. A panzer is cut off...another shredded...
Center - Units continue westward...surrounding another German corps...attacks are not wise in the weather.
South - Units dig in around Budapest...waiting for the snows to wear the unit down.
US/UK
Germany - The Panzer corp holding Berlin could not get replaced due to weather so the US and UK forces overrun it and pour south...with Berlin falling there are merely 2 cities left that produce supplies...one is Budapest...the other is not able to be reached by the Allies.
France - Allies pour around German units surrounding multiple corps...and overrunning a few...
South - Forces move northward...cutting off about 1/3 of the German army...
- The game is essentially over...all that is left is to count the VPs...Germany holds only 2 while the Allies hold the rest. At this time the UK will have a major victory...not sure if the US or Russians will even attain a minor victory oddly.
German count attacks are suicide with all the air. I did not pay well enough attention and the UK ran out of oil last turn...else I believe the entire German army would have been unsupplied as of this turn...but the paratrooper sat on the transport unable to land.
It was a good game overall...though I am still torn as too the Yugoslavian attack in 39...I now have another defense and suspect it would make the battle even more costly.
BUT it has changed my mind as to how to play the Germans now.
As for Vichy...there I am still torn...I like the buffer and forcing the US / UK to have to attack them...though it would be nice if the Axis could take them out in one turn...which is possible IF they have enough landing craft.
Just not sure if it is worth it...
Thanks for the game and can't wait for our next one...I suspect you have already formulated new plans...as have I.

Re: Looking for strong Axis player to play Harsh Winter
Yes, thanks so much for this game. It was really fun and I learned a ton. I have a new respect for aircraft that I'm trying out in another game. And you're right, carriers are insane.
I still don't quite understand why my naval air was so ineffective against you. I thought it was fighter cover but I tried that in another game and am constantly losing ships to naval air. I really wonder if it was just luck or if you have some secret there?
I also can't quite replicate your attacks against the Germans that were so incredibly effective. The air definitely helps but I still take far more losses than you were, so not sure if you have a secret there as well?
All in all it was a good game. First one I've lost so that was super instructive.

Re: Looking for strong Axis player to play Harsh Winter
Would be quite a gamble, as now (since a few patches ago) Casablanca also has to fall, so it will be very hard to get landing troops from France to Morocco without the UK noticing. Probably worth it when it was only Algiers to take, probably not that much anymore. Lots of ressources for a big gamble... Although it might still be worth to preventively take part of it, maybe depending of the situation?stjeand wrote: ↑Tue Dec 12, 2023 5:57 pm
As for Vichy...there I am still torn...I like the buffer and forcing the US / UK to have to attack them...though it would be nice if the Axis could take them out in one turn...which is possible IF they have enough landing craft.
Just not sure if it is worth it...
And thanks for the reports on the game!

Agreed...very difficult...
I can think of a way but it is dangerous for sure...
Will have to test it at some point.
Hopefully in the next battle I will do a full AAR...
Overall I built a huge UK army and had the US produce the air...which worked well enough.
Russia..Well we all know you build army after army...until manpower gets crippled...then move to armor/mech since they can only build every other turn or so, therefore you use less manpower.
There were a few mistakes that I am sure would not be made in the future...the surrender of Finland early...
The loss of the Kiel canal was huge...but it is a weird nightmare for the Allies.
At the end ships in the port were not able to leave...they could enter but then were trapped.
And the port just to the south east (sorry forget the name) can be captured and used for supply but you can never move any naval unit in or out of it. Suspect they are minor bugs but not crippling...just really annoying.

I suspect luck...I am sure you are switching between patrol and raider...I try raider as often as I can.kklemmick wrote: ↑Thu Dec 21, 2023 5:45 pm Yes, thanks so much for this game.
First one I've lost so that was super instructive.![]()
Honestly I did have a ton of damaged ships...they just did not sink. I think I had 4 UK BBs that had 1 or 2 points on them....but they still floated and could do naval bombardment. I will say for sure IF there is decent fighter cover they create quite shield overall...
My losses were odd...when the Russians were attacking early with 2 and 3 to 1 and the Russians were getting absolutely decimated...I remember tracking it one turn...and the Russians won 1 battle out of 20...and that was a 3 to 1...they even lost a 4 to 1...When I looked at the German side it was the complete opposite...
THEN suddenly in 43 it all switched.
For me the key was...efficiency...when your armor was attacked by 10 aircraft 20 times...then attacked I think losses were heavily increased even when they were still 2 or 3 to 1 attacks...
Though I have not fully tested that.
I have tested the CVs...they are completely broken.
