Great work, but I’ll admit I preferred your original palette.
The yellowing might look nostalgic if you look at an old board, but what is now yellow-ish was once white.
Also where did the nice green go of your original screenshot?

Once the underpinning graphics are done, colour palette variations are a doddle.
When I did the Time of Wrath maps, my favourite was a b&w map, (like Tactics II), that made the counters look sweeeeet.

But I hear what you're saying, my favourite colour map was from Operation Cobra, circa 1977.
I still have it, and it hasn't faded.

Glad to hear about your flexible approach - sounds like you are using layers for colors.
Took a look myself, but too time consuming for the moment.

I did not really dig deep into Tome of Wrath, but it did have some very nice maps styles included, I agree.

Again I like all your examples, was just worried No.1 was lost forever.
Somehow the soft green vs the otherwise hard edged terrain hexes is very pleasing to the eye (imo).
But the hard edged maps also look great - Eastern Med and the last North Germany maps.

Well every style will have its fans and opinions.

Keep up the good work.

I'm my own fussiest critic.
If I don't like it, it won't pass muster.

It is a treat to see you working away. New name and all.

This game is worth the effort.

I really think if Doomtrader could have held it all together Wastelands could have done this years ago. If they had "Unity" it would have helped immensely. Do you remember the grand ideas they had?

Time of Wrath had massive potential.
I even scored a wastelands T-shirt for my efforts.
But got massively burned by a kickstarter game they never delivered on.
But with Warplan... I'm encouraged.
Good to see you playing this Chuck.

Andrew

Coastal Erosion

Post by Magpius »

Took a while....

but wanted a smoother coast line.
Note, if I make the map too white the map text all but disappears.

Still working on towns, borders, arrows etc etc etc....

Then units...

Your map is starting to grow on me. Brings back memories of the grande ole times of yesteryear. With matching counters this could be a really nice treat!

Was even considering maybe just red and blue counters, or at least a very simple cardboard style parred right back.

working my way through the resources...

Image

towns being erased and replaced...
The yellow back ground is not the map colour.
The hex grid is just a reference overlay.
The round dots are not staying.
Some smaller towns will probably be SPI grey-blue. just for some diversity.

Looking forward to this. So different from what my mod tried to achieve. You have any counters yet?

First the map.
Then the units.
At some point I'd like to actually PLAY this game.

Do you have an idea what the counters should look like? Maybe there is a picture of a counters sheet on the net that you want to go for?

Not specifically.
I played A LOT of Operation Cobra and others from Strategy and Tactics Magazine.
So I will be looking through the counter scans at BoardGameGeek for inspiration.
The focus for me is taking the glossy shine off the counters. I want them to look like cardboard, with a hint of drop shadow on the map.
I don't expect to radically change the graphics. I prefer nato counters, although I have done figured ones previously, but people get obsessed about silhouettes needing to reflect tech levels etc...
and as I said, at some point I just want to play instead of push pixels.
