Infinite Supply Question / Critique

Post by FrancPeinovich »

Hello all, new to the game (played about 40 hours give or take). I understand that ports give limited supply, while main supply gives an infinite amount of supply assuming there are proper rail lines.

However, I don't understand how this is realistic when it comes to production. If a main supply hex is encircled from other main supply hexes, units in that area should still get a penalty after a certain amount of time.

For example, if a German army is fully encircled in Cologne, or if the Red Army is encircled at Moscow, those forces shouldn't have access to the majority of their country's stockpiles and production.

As of now, it seems like the main point of encircling enemies is to trigger a shatter/overrun (?) unless the encircled units aren't in a main supply hub area which is also encircled. Which seems too gamey in my opinion.

If I'm not mistaken, I think that for a future instalment there should be a cap on all main supply points. As in, there will be no immediate effect, but any main supply point will run out of supply after a certain number of turns (for example, if the Germans fully encircle Kiev but don't take the city itself, the pocket will be out of Kiev's stockpiled supply after X turns). This could also depend on the amount of units in the pocket. So one division could last X turns if fully encircled at Prague, but if a corps or several corps were encircled in the same main supply pocket, they would run out of supply much faster.

Or maybe I don't understand the system and units that are encircled while still being next to a main supply hub do have a penalty. Either way, could use some help ensuring I understand this correctly. Aside from some other issues I am really enjoying WarPlan.
