Hide MV/SL by default? Shortcuts to min/max Detailed Map?

World in Flames is the computer version of Australian Design Group classic board game. World In Flames is a highly detailed game covering the both Europe and Pacific Theaters of Operations during World War II. If you want grand strategy this game is for you.

Hide MV/SL by default? Shortcuts to min/max Detailed Map?

Post by Grotius »

1. Is there any way to hide the Map View and Screen Layout lists by default? I rarely need them, and they take up valuable real estate.

2. Also, is there a shortcut for minimizing and maximizing the Detailed Map? I like playing with it full screen, but it'd be nice to "restore" it with a single keyboard shortcut. Yes, clicking on it works, but my aging hands find mousing more tiring than keyboard hotkeys.

3. Finally, is there a shortcut for the end phase button? I thought it was enter or ctl-enter, but neither seems to work.

Thanks!

1. You can edit them so they have very few entries and you can use the Screen Layout function to create a customized presentation with them off in some unused corner. But I think to get all the map views done, you have to do that for every major power which is 9 times, counting Vichy France.

2. I have had endless trouble trying to do that with a single monitor. Seems like it's very hard to get it back to the dimensions you had to start with, so I leave it alone and am content with giving up the thin strip at the top for the Main Form. (Or I would be content if I only had one monitor! With two, you solve a lot of issues both with respect to this and #1 - see tm.asp?m=4393722 post #11.)

3. I don't know of one.

I am not one that ever uses the MV and SL windows either. It would be nice if there were a toggle setting in the View drop-down menu to turn these on and off, just as there is for the Global Map (which I use constantly, on my second monitor). However, coding such a feature is probably not a trivial job.
There is no overkill. There is only "open fire" and "reloading."

Thanks for your replies. I tried MWIF with 2 monitors a few years back, and I had trouble with it. Maybe it's improved? I normally keep the 2nd monitor off, but I'll try it later today.

Yeah, I almost never use either MV or SL. If I need to jump somewhere, I prefer the Global map; it's more intuitive. MV and SL just take up screen space, and so I click "x" on them every time they reappear, which is quite often.

You can "roll them up" using the button in the top left of the form.

Thanks, Steve. That's helpful. I've rolled them up and that does seem to persist for the same major power. I hope it persists from one impulse to the next, etc.

Alas, my graphics card (GTX 980) has only one DVI monitor output; I see other versions of the 980 with lots of other outputs, but mine has just the one. (How did I manage that?) I'm not sure how to split it to two monitors. Is attempting to splits its signal a bad idea? My main monitor is a 30-inch Dell 3007 (DVI interface); I have a cheaper 20-something-inch ViewSonic monitor with a DVI interface sitting around unused. (Not sure if this is the right forum for asking these questions! Should I switch over to tech support?)

I have not seen a graphics card that did not have VGA in addition to either DVI or HDMI (or both - mine has all 3). So I run one screen on HDMI and one on VGA. Tried one on each of the digital outputs --> that did not work.

I'm going to have to dig out the manual for my card. I see only the one DVI port. I do see a few very small plastic bumps, but they don't look large enough to be covering other sorts of outputs. Truth be told, my system is now 7-plus years old, and it's time to build or buy a new one. Maybe after the cashflow crunch from the holiday season subsides...

I can indeed "roll them up," but the rolled-up state does not persist. The next impulse, I have to roll them up again; I do this a lot. I prefer the "x" to remove the MV/SL altogether, but this doesn't persist either. Is there a way to make it persist? If not, I suppose it's a low-priority "wish list" item; it doesn't seem to bother anyone but me.

On the subject of UI: is there a hotkey for "show/hide units in hex"? I use that function all the time, and I often hide the main form with the Detailed Map. It'd be nice to show/hide units without having to "restore" the Main Form. Again, a low-priority "wish-list" item.
