Just getting started

Post by Zovs »

So I have been playing board war games since 1978 or about 42 or so years I guess. I also started playing computer war games around 1994 or '95 when I found Steel Panthers. I bought this game last year during an incredible sale and it has just basically sat.

Well, a recent discussion in the General thread on "The Question to ask about the Italians" sparked my interested to first dig up my CWIE2 and try some things and then I remembered I have MWIF so I fired it up and started watching the tutorial videos, and I was totally impressed. I am on the third one and decided to also read the text tutorials and keep them in sync as I learn. After I get through all the video and text tutorials I plan on doing the interacting ones.

I think that in of itself should get me to the next stage which would be to actually play the game.

So for myself I think that is the School of MWIF all by it's self.

Proablly take a few weeks to go through and read it all (or maybe a week, I don't know), but so far I like what I am seeing and it's just now starting to make some sense.

(a long long time ago, I think I traded something for WiF and had the box, map and counters and rules all laid out but never really played it, well now going to actually take a stab at it)...

thanks for listening.

Quick question.

My installed version (not sure when I installed it) says: 3.0.2

I have downloaded two installers:

v03.00.02.00
v03.01.00.00Beta

First question is the v03.00.02.00 the same as 3.0.2?
Second question what exactly is the v03.01.00.00Beta?

Thank you in advance.

Orm, thank you!

So the beta is optional? I also found two hotfixes, are these essential? Is it better to wait? I don't have any real games going and am just learning anyway.

All beta is optional. However, the 03.02.00 is a hot patch so that is optional as well.

However, the latest version, 03.02.00, seems stable enough.

xxxxx

I suspect that it is best to update with the beta version that you found since it may contain more updated files than just the MWIF.exe. And after that I suggest that you update with the latest hot patch. But as I am not certain on what (files) that the older beta version actually contains this is a mere guess on my part.

If the two versions are complete installers then the latest should be enough, and then installing the hot patch above it. Or so I think anyway.

We must be in the same generation and same parallel universe. I started gaming in the 70's with the Avalon Hill war games, ended with the World in Flames board game. A monster game, but the best there was, in my opinion. I graduated to Steel Panthers, as well, and the earlier comp. games at the time. I Have purchased the MWIF, and I am also going thru the tutorials. Best of luck on the new MWIF.

Thanks Orm, I'll take it slow. Most likely I do the beta patch and then the hot fix next week.

Same to you TheeWarLord and yeah, the only board war game series I still own is my ASL collection (caught up to 2015, and nothing since). I also have CWIE2 and play that from time to time, so MWiF seems like a great fit/filler.
